Police report drug haul seizure worth up to £30 million in Brownhills, England

Monday, December 2, 2013

Police in the West Midlands in England today said nearly 200 kilograms worth of drugs with value possibly as great as £30 million (about US$49 million or €36 million) has been seized from a unit in the town of Brownhills. In what an officer described as “one of the largest [seizures] in the force’s 39 year history”, West Midlands Police reported recovering six big cellophane-wrapped cardboard boxes containing cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA (“ecstasy”) in a police raid operation on the Maybrook Industrial Estate in the town on Wednesday.

The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated

The seized boxes, which had been loaded onto five freight pallets, contained 120 one-kilogram bags of cannabis, 50 one-kilogram bags of MDMA, and five one-kilogram bricks of cocaine. In a press release, West Midlands Police described what happened after officers found the drugs as they were being unloaded in the operation. “When officers opened the boxes they discovered a deep layer of protective foam chips beneath which the drugs were carefully layered”, the force said. “All the drugs were wrapped in thick plastic bags taped closed with the cannabis vacuum packed to prevent its distinctive pungent aroma from drawing unwanted attention.” Police moved the drugs via forklift truck to a flatbed lorry to remove them.

Detective Sergeant Carl Russell of West Midlands Police’s Force CID said the seizure was the largest he had ever made in the 24 years he has been in West Midlands Police and one of the biggest seizures the force has made since its formation in 1974. “The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated”, he said. “The drugs had almost certainly been packed to order ready for shipping within Britain but possibly even further afield. Our operation will have a national effect and we are working closely with a range of law enforcement agencies to identify those involved in this crime at whatever level.”

Expert testing on the drugs is ongoing. Estimates described as “conservative” suggest the value of the drugs amounts to £10 million (about US$16.4 million or €12 million), although they could be worth as much as £30 million, subject to purity tests, police said.

Police arrested three men at the unit on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. The men, a 50-year-old from Brownhills, a 51-year-old from the Norton area of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, and one aged 53 from Brownhills, have been released on bail as police investigations to “hunt those responsible” continue. West Midlands Police told Wikinews no person has yet been charged in connection with the seizure. Supplying a controlled drug is an imprisonable offence in England, although length of jail sentences vary according to the class and quantity of drugs and the significance of offenders’ roles in committing the crime.

Live grenade thrown at George Bush in Georgia

Wednesday, May 18, 2005File:Bush Embassy photo.jpg

On May 10 while visiting Georgia’s capital Tbilisi a live hand grenade landed within 100 feet of United States President George W. Bush.

The grenade was wrapped in a dark plaid cloth handkerchief. According to Brian Paarmann, the FBI’s legal attache at the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi, it was “tossed in the general direction of the main stage” about 1:30 p.m., right after Bush began speaking, and landed less than 100 feet from the podium. The grenade reportedly bounced off a child’s cap and then was removed by a Georgian security officer.

The White House initially stated that the president was in no real danger, however the event has lead to a review of security measures at presidential events.

An FBI official at the U.S. embassy in Georgia confirms that an explosive device was thrown, but due to a malfunction it failed to detonate. “This hand grenade appears to be a live device that simply failed to function due to a light strike on the blasting cap induced by a slow deployment of the spoon activation device,” the FBI stated.

The FBI is still investigating the incident. According to their report the device failed to explode because of a malfunction. “The activation device deployed too slowly to hit the blasting cap hard enough,” agent Bryan Paarmann said. A 20,000 laris (US$10,978) reward is offered for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible.

The grenade was a knock-off of a Soviet-designed RGD-5, which has a lethal range of about 100 feet. “We consider this act to be a threat against the health and welfare of both the president of the United States and the president of Georgia as well as the multitude of Georgian people that had turned out at this event,” Paarmann said. It had initially been believed to be a non-explosive model used for military training.

Summer In The City: New York Music For August

Summer in the City: New York Music for August

by

PeterBrownNY There is no doubt that the sweltering heat in New York during August makes it almost unbearable to do the standard New York tours. Muggy, crowded and sometimes confusing, the city compensates for this with a series of cooling, outdoor music festivals and performances. If you are looking for what to do in New York, there are a host of free and fun musical events in August, including the New York Philharmonic Orchestra performing in all five boroughs! There is even more for classical music lovers, with New York’s oldest free outdoor concert series, the Naumburg Orchestral takes place for free on Mondays and Tuesdays in Central Park. For jazz fans, the Charlie Parker Jazz festival in late August is an absolute must. Set in two Manhattan parks where Charlie Parker worked and lived, the festival is organised by the CityParks foundation, promoting free and accessible arts, sports, education and community-building programs within NYC parks. For the more contemporary focused New York tourist

, the Hudson River Park’s ‘River Rocks 2012’ showcases some of New York’s most up and coming indie and alternative bands. Another riverside festival worth checking out is the 4Knots music festival at South Street Seaport.

But perhaps towering over all of these is another CityParks organised event- Summerstage. Mixing some of the best New York artists and world music icons, Summerstage has worked tirelessly to provide free access to music and arts in some of the city’s most deprived areas. CityParks was founded in 1989 and seeks to integrate music, arts and sports with education, and is now a perpetual and well loved feature of New York summers. The music events held in August give a glimpse of a very different New York than the one sold on countless New York city tours. Community focused and emblazoned with a spirit of sunshine and freedom, it allows the visitor to see the city as its residents experience it. Furthermore the sheer range of different music styles on offer, catering to everyone’s taste no matter what area of the world or era of time they are from. So whether its lazing about in a park, or taking a stroll by the river side, free music festivals and concerts are a great way to see New York, learn about its people, and take away from your visit your very own soundtrack!

With so many unique attractions, world-famous museums and skyscrapers there is always plenty to do in New York.

Big Brown victorious in Kentucky Derby, runner-up Eight Belles breaks down

Saturday, May 3, 2008

In a dominating performance, Big Brown triumphed in the 2008 Kentucky Derby. Jockey Kent Desormeaux gave Big Brown a stalking ride, even as he was 4-wide along the backstretch. Once they reached the top of the stretch, Big Brown grabbed the lead and won going away, 4 3/4 lengths away from filly Eight Belles. Desormeaux wins his third Kentucky Derby, while trainer Richard Dutrow savored his victory after having bragged about how well his horse is for the Derby.

There was no possible way Eight Belles could be saved… that’s an injury that’s very painful.

Shortly after the race finished, Eight Belles collapsed on the backstretch, shattering her two front ankles. She was euthanized minutes later. Veterinarian Larry Bramlage conceded that “there was no possible way Eight Belles could be saved… that’s an injury that’s very painful.” The moment was bittersweet for trainer Larry Jones, who sent Eight Belle’s stablemate Proud Spell to victory in the Kentucky Oaks.

Sent off 2-1 as the post-time favorite, Big Brown paid $6.80 to win. The $2 exacta (20-5) paid $141.60. The $1 trifecta (20-5-16) paid a healthy $1,722.80 with 13-1 shot Denis of Cork, and the $1 superfecta (20-5-16-2) paid a very respectable $29,368.90 with 37-1 shot Tale of Ekati.

Big Brown is being pointed to run in the Preakness Stakes on May 17. However, few horses from this year’s Kentucky Derby are looking to follow, opting instead to run in the Belmont Stakes on June 7.

Alaskan Governor and Republican U.S. vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin’s email account hacked

Saturday, September 20, 2008

A hacker who has claimed to be loosely associated with internet group Anonymous managed to hack into the email account of Alaskan Governor and Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin in the early morning hours of Wednesday, September 16.

Partial contents of her email account – including two family photos, email messages and contact lists – were subsequently hosted online at Wikileaks.org, a website that anonymously hosts leaked government and corporate documents. Anonymous, who were responsible for attacks on Scientology in the past, have claimed credit for the intrusion. The email account has been used by Palin for conducting government business and communication, circumventing transparency laws.

The hacker gained access to Palin’s account by answering Yahoo!’s security questions, finding the answers on websites like Wikipedia.org. The hacker was apparently careless and frightened, and posted the new password on 4chan.org as well as a few hasty screenshots. In the screenshots were proxy data, which Ctunnel.com owner Gabriel Ramuglia plans to use to help with FBI investigations.

I read all of the e-mails in the Palin’s account and found nothing incriminating, nothing that would derail her campaign as I had hoped. All I saw was personal stuff, some clerical stuff from when she was governor and pictures of her family.

“White hat” hackers, however, have discovered that the hacker’s online identity was linked to the email address of David Kernell, the son of Democratic Tennessee state representative Mike Kernell. When confronted, Kernell made no confirmation of that. While 4chan has deleted all images of the email account, the screenshots have quickly spread to blogs and news websites online.

5 Common Myths About Hiring A Figure Competition Coach}

Submitted by: Olesya Novik

Many people dream of their figure competition and hoisting that trophy. They are willing to do a lot of things to reach that pinnacle via hiring a top women’s figure competition coach.

There are, however, a lot of myths associated with such figure prep coaches – and they have the potential to cost you a lot of money and stress in the long run if you do not pick the right figure competition prep coach.

So without further ado, here are the five most common myths about hiring a figure competition coach for your contest prep, plus the truth behind the myth:

“I will be in shape for my first figure contest in a couple weeks” Figure competition shape takes time, and nothing you do will shorten it down to a couple weeks.

In fact, you will need to doggedly stick to your figure competition prep coach’s plan for at least a month before you can even begin to notice any change in your body’s physique. Anything faster than this is impossible, and pushing yourself to develop muscles by pumping iron three times for every day of the week and losing 3 pounds of fat every day is extremely dangerous for your health and any decent prep coach of figure competitions knows this very well.

“I need specialized supplements to get in figure contest shape” Supplement companies will deny it, online supplement stores will deny it, but the truth of the matter is that you can get perfect figure competition contest shape using only your body, food, cardio and a great training program from a top figure coach.

Protein Powders, BCAA’s, Fat Burners, Nitric Oxide Boosters and any other supplement that is “mandatory” by the supplement company’s view are not necessary to get into figure contest shape. An experienced specialized figure competition coach will help you focus on your goals of winning that figure competition and keep your on track with that figure coach’s program alone. Supplements do help but are in no way a substitute for a great figure prep coach.

“I have to hours and hours of cardio to get that figure competition body” A common mistake figure coaches make when designing a plan for a women’s figure contest is to put too much focus on hours of cardio – not the correct diet.

Even a single 30 min session of intense cardio post workout is more effective than ten grueling 60 mins sessions of cardio a week. The mark of a good figure competition coach is the fact that she listens to how your body feels and reacts when your diet and training are pushed to their limits. Cardio can be determined and added after those two are in place. Whenever you choose your figure competition coach you need to make sure she knows what she is doing and that figure coach will listen to you and your body. You should be able to effectively sculpt your abs to perfection without hours and hours of cardio per week. This is why it is extremely important to choose your Figure coach wisely.

“I only need to focus on exercise to get into figure competition shape” Women’s figure competition contest prep is as much about diet as it is training correctly, which is why you need to watch out for uneducated figure prep coaches when hiring one for a contest.

This is especially true for those “guru” coaches that have a reputation in the industry for giving out cookie cutter diets, as even a slightly incorrect diet that never gets changed and adapted to your emotional needs as a women will keep those abs covered in fat and prevent a lean sculpted physique from ever being shown on stage at your figure competition contest. Mix in the physical demands of being women, living complications with your family, and stresses of every day life and you will only put your own body in greater peril if you do not hire the perfect figure competition prep coach.

“I don’t need to worry about how easily I can get in touch with my figure coach” Oh, you better be worried – how are you going to know what to change modify and adapt in your diet, cardio and training routine if you can’t ever get a hold of your figure competition coach? If they are nowhere to be found how will you ever know how to come into your show correctly as the last week of figure contest prep is the most important. This is especially true for top figure contest competitors doing a national level show with the ultimate goal of winning a procard.

This figure competition journey is not a one-time thing that ends once you spend a week on your diet in hopes of achieving your desired physique. You need to keep going at it for weeks and years on end if you ever hope to make those figure competition magazine covers and be rich and famous.

Choose a women’s figure competition prep diet and training coach wisely as she will need to learn the ins and outs of your body and emotional needs just as well if not better than you. That figure competition coach will be there for you for years to come on your journey to stardom. If you pick the wrong one you will lose money, blood sweat and tears and that hard effort can go to waste if you don’t pick the right figure coach.

Make sure to bust these five myths about figure competition contest prep coaches, and you will be well on your way to being rich and famous, on the cover of your favorite magazine, all the while your and your figure coach sculpt the winning physique.

Ricky Hatton regains IBF light welterweight title

Sunday, January 21, 2007

Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton regained the IBF light welterweight title belt he relinquished less than 12 months ago when he defeated Juan Urango in Las Vegas, Nevada tonight.

“The Hitman” won by unanimous decision, as the fight went to 12 rounds. Despite early match odds suggesting Hatton would dominate the fight, this was not the case. Each round was close, but most pundits and judges alike agreed that Urango only won 1 of the 12 rounds, with Hatton taking the other 11.

Despite the unfamiliar confines of Las Vegas, Hatton looked touched by the ringing of football fan-like chants, familiar in British boxing, that rang around the arena, as more than half of it was filled by traveling support from across the atlantic.

Many in the UK will hope Hatton has ended the “curse” that has seen names such as Frank Bruno, Naseem Hamed, Barry McGuigan and others fall short while headlining fights on “The Strip”.

From here, it is widely believed “The Hitman” will move on to fight Jose Luis Castillo in June, again likely in Vegas.

Chinese authorities say they are preparing to launch a crackdown on melamine-laced milk after the scandal over tainted products, which made hundreds of thousands of children ill two years ago and damaged China’s brand reputation overseas, resurfaced.

China has dispatched inspectors to sixteen provinces to urge local governments to thoroughly investigate cases concerning food safety.

The decision comes after milk products tainted with the industrial chemical melamine were removed from sale in Shanghai and the provinces of Shaanxi, Shandong, Liaoning and Hebei, the state-run Xinhua News Agency said.
