Recalled pet food found to contain rat poison

Friday, March 23, 2007

In a press release earlier today, New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker, along with Dean of Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine Donald F. Smith, confirmed that scientists at the New York State Food Laboratory identified Aminopterin as a toxin present in cat food samples from Menu Foods.

Menu Foods is the manufacturer of several brands of cat and dog food subject to a March 16, 2007 recall.

Aminopterin is a drug used in chemotherapy for its immunosuppressive properties and, in some areas outside the US, as a rat poison. Earlier reports stated that wheat gluten was a factor being investigated, and officials now state that the toxin would have come from Chinese wheat used in the pet food, where it is used for pest control. Investigators will not say that this is the only contaminant found in the recalled food, but knowing the identity of the toxin should assist veterinarians treating affected animals.

The Food Laboratory tested samples of cat food received from a toxicologist at the New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell University. The samples were found to contain the rodenticide at levels of at least 40 parts per million.

Commissioner Hooker stated, “We are pleased that the expertise of our New York State Food Laboratory was able to contribute to identifying the agent that caused numerous illnesses and deaths in dogs and cats across the nation.”

The press release suggests Aminopterin, a derivative of folic acid, can cause cancer and birth defects in humans and can cause kidney damage in dogs and cats. Aminopterin is not permitted for use in the United States.

The New York State Food Laboratory is part of the Federal Food Emergency Response Network (FERN) and as such, is capable of running a number of unique poison/toxin tests on food, including the test that identified Aminopterin.

HIV-positive man receives 35 years for spitting on Dallas police officer

Sunday, May 18, 2008

An HIV-positive man was sentenced to 35 years in prison Wednesday, one day after being convicted of harassment of a public servant for spitting into the eye and open mouth of a Dallas, Texas police officer in May 2006. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that no one has ever contracted HIV from saliva, and a gay-rights and AIDS advocacy group called the sentence excessive.

A Dallas County jury concluded that Willie Campbell’s act of spitting on policeman Dan Waller in 2006 constituted the use of his saliva as a deadly weapon. The incident occurred while Campbell, 42, was resisting arrest while being taken into custody for public intoxication.

“He turns and spits. He hits me in the eye and mouth. Then he told me he has AIDS. I immediately began looking for something to flush my eyes with,” said Waller to The Dallas Morning News.

Officer Waller responded after a bystander reported seeing an unconscious male lying outside a building. Dallas County prosecutors stated that Campbell attempted to fight paramedics and kicked the police officer who arrested him for public intoxication.

It’s been 25 years since the virus was identified, but there are still lots of fears.

Prosecutors said that Campbell yelled that he was innocent during the trial, and claimed a police officer was lying. Campbell’s lawyer Russell Heinrichs said that because he had a history of convictions including similarly attacking two other police officers, biting inmates, and other offenses, he was indicted under a habitual offender statute. The statute increased his minimum sentence to 25 years in prison. Because the jury ruled that Campbell’s saliva was used as a deadly weapon, he will not be eligible for parole until completing at least half his sentence.

If you look at the facts of this case, it was clear that the defendant intended to cause serious bodily injury.

The organization Lambda Legal (Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund), which advocates for individuals living with HIV, says that saliva should not be considered a deadly weapon. Bebe Anderson, the HIV projects director at Lambda Legal, spoke with The Dallas Morning News about the sentence. “It’s been 25 years since the virus was identified, but there are still lots of fears,” said Anderson.

The Dallas County prosecutor who handled the trial, Jenni Morse, said that the deadly weapon finding was justified. “No matter how minuscule, there is some risk. That means there is the possibility of causing serious bodily injury or death,” said Morse. Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins stated: “If you look at the facts of this case, it was clear that the defendant intended to cause serious bodily injury.”

Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV.

A page at the CDC’s website, HIV and Its Transmission, states: “HIV has been found in saliva and tears in very low quantities from some AIDS patients.” The subsection “Saliva, Tears, and Sweat” concludes that: “Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV.” On Friday the Dallas County Health Department released a statement explaining that HIV is most commonly spread through sexual contact, sharing needles, or transfusion from an infected blood product.

Sunderbans Home To The Royal Bengal Tigers

By David H. Urmann

Sunderbans is one of the most alluring natural reserves in the entire world. It carries in its folds various mysteries and abounds in vegetative and wildlife. It was formerly known as the Sunderbands by the British.

The region is a vast tract of forest and swamp water and stretches from the lower part of the Ganges Estuary to the Meghna River Estuary in Bangladesh. It extends to an area of about 160 kilometers along the Bay of Bengal.Sunderbans are also part of the largest riverine delta formed by three gigantic rivers namely, the Ganga, Brahmaputra and the Meghna respectively. It extends up to nearly 100 kilometers inland. It is very close to Kolkata and has one of the most unique ecosystems in the whole world.

There are two myths related to the nomenclature of the place.According to one, the place draws its name from the Sundari Trees which are in abundance in the forests while others believe that drawing up on the beauty of the jungles, it is called Sunderbans wherein Sunder means Beautiful and Ban means jungle in Bangla.

It is situated at the mouth of the River Gange and is spread on 54 islands and across two countries. It forms the world’s largest delta regions. The wetlands of Sunderbans cover an area of 4262 square kilometers in India. It is home to the world renowned the Royal Bengal Tiger and was adopted for the Project Tiger in 1974.This forest spreads over an area of 2585 square kilometers. The core area of 1330 square kilometers is a National Park and also the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There is a high level of salinity in the region of Sunderbans. The typical forest comprises of such trees which have adapted to the peculiar estuarine condition of high salinity, soil erosion and the daily barrage of the tidal waves. The tidal forms and the vegetation in the mangroves are responsible for the dynamic eco-system and the nutrient cycling of both the terrestrial as well as aquatic forms.

Both the flora and fauna in the Sunderbans have changed themselves according to the changing conditions of the forests. They have acclimatized accordingly. The habitat is suitable for animals which have adjusted to the tidal swamp area. This has contributed in developing certain unique traits in the animals. One of the best examples of this is the man-eating habit of the Royal Bengal Tiger in the Sunderbans.

This is prevalent here only and around 100-200 people lose their lives each year, falling prey to this wild beast.More commonly, the tigers do not turn man-eaters very frequently but in this jungle, they are born man-eaters.It is said that this is a hereditary trait in these animals.

Apart from this there are several species of animals which inhabit this jungle. Most prominently, Sunderbans is home to Cheetal, Wild Boar, and Monkeys. It is also full of alligators, crabs and fish. The Sunderbans is also the nesting place of the nearly extinct Olive Ridley Turtles, Green Turtles and the Hawk’s Bill Turtles.

The jungles are also a haven for the migratory birds which add to the mystical value of the place.

The forests and waters of the Sunderbans have been home to some ethnic tribes which have survived in the most turbulent times too. They depend on the forest for food, fuel and livelihood. These tribal groups collect honey or the locally available forest produce and try to eke out a living. Some of the tribal groups are dependent on the fishing in the area and try to earn a living out of it.

One of the most unique facts about this region is that it can be accessed only through the waterways. There are several entry points to the National Park but the one most popular one is Port Canning which is connected by the suburban railway from Kolkata. The park can also be entered from Sonakhali or Bagna via Dhamakali. If one is interested in visiting the park from the South 24 Parganas Forest Division, then one needs to get permission which are available at Canning, Sonakhali, Bagna for the Sunderbans Tiger Reserve and Canning, Namkhana and Raidighi for the Western Part of the Sunderbans Forest.

Thus, one can really enjoy the Sunderbans by entering in to its mystical folds, which has so many mysteries of nature hidden in its dense foliage and the dense mangroves. It is a place which weaves its magic up on you slowly but steadily.

Australian government hopes to establish triage by phone

Sunday, January 29, 2006

The Australian federal government hopes to slash hospital emergency department waiting queues by setting up a 24-hour national medical hotline.

A government source said that the National Health Call Centre Network would be manned by registered triage nurses 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. Triage nurses would perform a diagnosis over the phone based upon the description given by the patient. The patient would then be referred to the nearest emergency department, their local GP or pharmacy – as determined by the nurse.

The issue is expected to be discussed at next month’s Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting in Canberra. It is believed that the states and territories are supportive of the system.

If agreed upon by COAG, the service will be jointly funded by state/territory and the commonwealth governments at a cost of $40 million a year. The service would take 18 months to set up.

The service will be ran from a centralised call centre and be managed by a private contractor.

Julia Gillard, the opposition’s spokeswoman for health said any national call service needed to be linked with local GPs and medical services.

Gillard claims that under a Labor government, an after-hours “Pizza Hut” style service would be implemented, with a single national number connecting to a local call centre.

“You would be talking to people in the locality you are in and who know the local services,” she said

The Australian Medical Association, an organisation representing more than 27,000 doctors in Australia has slammed the proposal saying it will only deter people from seeking appropriate medical treatment.

Navy helping New Orleans pets

Saturday, September 17, 2005

The Spanish word “tortuga” means “turtle.” But in the wake of the New Orleans disaster, the USS Tortuga is helping other animals.

For nearly two weeks now, sailors from Tortuga’s repair division have devoted much of their time during this disaster relief operation to ensure the health and comfort of displaced pets.

September 4th, just after the ship moored to a pier at Naval Support Activity (NSA) New Orleans, HT1(SW) Mark Hanley and DC1(SW) Antony Graves gathered materials from the repair shop on board to construct a kennel along the levee. The facility they made soon became a popular shelter for the homeless animals of the storm.

Tortuga’s search and rescue team brought aboard more than 170 displaced citizens during this past week, providing them with food, water, medical aid and a place to sleep.

Tortuga’s makeshift kennel, named ‘Camp Milo & Otis,’ has housed as many as 90 dogs, eight cats, one rabbit, one guinea pig, a pair of parakeets and a flightless pigeon during the past week of operation.

Currently, there are 14 dogs that remain in Tortuga’s care, as many of the other pets have been taken to animal shelters in the area for extra medical attention, or been claimed by their owners upon arrival to Tortuga. The pets that Tortuga has registered have all been in the hands of professional veterinarians assigned to provide expert medical attention to the members of Camp Milo & Otis.

Dr. Kelly Crowdis and Dr. Latina Gambles, both from Tuskegee University and Christian Veterinary Missions, have treated many of the pets for infection, dehydration, malnourishment and broken bones at the Camp during the past week.

“The animals were bathed and assessed before physical interaction with the sailors,” said Dr. Crowdis. “They’ve been given immunizations, antibiotics and medications based on their medical needs.”

Dr. Crowdis added, “What these sailors have done on their own has been such a heart-warming thing. As an animal lover, it is so comforting to know that everyone cares about the animals in addition to the human lives rescued from the storm. I’m very pleased with these guys for taking the initiative to construct this kennel.”

Graves, Hanley and other members of their division have consistently bathed, fed, walked and given special attention to every dog, every day.

“We play with them,” said Hanley. “We take them out of their kennels to give them attention every day. And we’ll continue to do that for as long as our ship’s mission keeps us here.”

September 11th, the Agricultural Center at Louisiana State University donated supplies to “Camp Milo & Otis” in support of Tortuga’s efforts to help the animal victims.

”We got medical supplies, bowls, food, cages, leashes, collars, toys, cat litter and cleaning supplies from these people yesterday,” said Graves. “It’s nice to know that so many people out there have heard about what our ship is doing, and responded by donating so much to support us the best they can.”

A photo gallery of unclaimed pets is on the USS Tortuga’s web site.

As part of disaster plans, the Department of Homeland Security has also deployed Veterinary Medical Assistance Teams to provide medical care to pets and livestock, as well as provide any needed veterinary medical care for search and rescue dogs.

There are over 3,850 animals being sheltered around the state. If someone is looking for a pet they should contact their nearest Humane Society or go online to http://www.petfinder.org// . More information is also available at http://www.vetmed.lsu.edu//.

Nine children abandoned at hospital emergency room in Nebraska, USA

Thursday, September 25, 2008

A man has abandoned his nine children at a hospital emergency room in Nebraska, but will not be prosecuted under Nebraska state law.

The children, whose ages range from 1 to 17 years old, were dropped off by their unnamed father at Saint Joseph Hospital at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha on Wednesday evening. Authorities are still trying to find the children’s mother.

According to Nebraska’s ‘safe haven law’, the parents or caretaker of any children aged 17 and under are allowed to abandon them at any facility that has a valid license with the state. As a result, the parents would not be prosecuted for doing so. Originally the law was to prevent infants from being abandoned, but was recently amended to include toddlers and teenagers.

Since the law was changed, at least 14 children have been abandoned at hospitals and police stations in Nebraska. State law says that all facilities must keep a monthly count of all abandoned children.

How To Do Your Own Pr For Enterprenerial Companies

How To Do Your Own PR For Enterprenerial Companies

by

Devon Blaine

How many of you watch television news daily? Listen to news radio as you commute? Read your local daily newspaper? Or the Wall Street Journal? Have you ever wondered how the stories on people and companies got there? About 75 percent are planted by public relations people. That is public relations at work, getting companies such as yours exposure by strategically designing what you have to talk about in either a newsworthy or public service fashion. In fact, at my office, we often say that nearly everyone can become famous overnight.

Keep this in mind as you contemplate and prioritize the possibilities. And, to borrow a phrase from one motivational speaker, plan your work, then work your plan. Now that you have determined what you are going to do, who is going to do it? Some of the most effective early stage public relations campaigns have been handled by the presidents assistant. He or she is someone who knows the company, its customers and goals, and has regular access to you. And, if that person is also articulate and writes well, it is logical for some public relations activities to be added to his or her job description. In fact, this may be the only way a new business can afford a public relations effort early on. However, it is important to realize that with limited staff available only part time for communications tasks, the targeted outlets and anticipated outcome must be minimized.

Implementing a public relations campaign requires an extraordinary amount of time. Gear your expectations accordingly. And, in a situation such as the above, prioritization is particularly critical. Then too, assuming the presidents assistant has no professional public relations background, he or she will need to acquire some media savvy. This includes developing a broad based knowledge of business hot topics. Framing a story in terms of the trend it represents. Understanding both the targeted outlet and your market. Knowing how to pitch the piece several different ways offering exclusives, being aware of conflicts, persevering, even after several rejections, while accepting no gracefully. Following UPI style and double checking facts, phone numbers, etc. Knowing what is and what is not generally accepted practice

Following through on commitments in a timely fashion Establishing a reputation for credibility and honesty When your company has expanded and its communications needs are greater than those that can be handled by the president?s assistant on a part-time basis, the next step is to add an experienced full-time public relations staff person or persons, retain an outside agency, or both.

A number of factors should be considered in the equation. Here are several possible scenarios. If trade publications are the only media important to your company, one professional who has specialized in your industry collateral materials, and copy, etc. If penetrating one marketplace is critical to your success, whether it be the hospitality industry, financial services, car dealerships, retail stores, etc. who has the proven expertise to do the job? This could be an individual or an agency. If a mix of trade and general interest publications plus financial public relations and investor relations is required, is there any singular person who can provide the diverse support you need? And, if so, can you afford him or her? The more expansive and sophisticated your communications activities become, the more you’ll benefit from the combined expertise of a number of professionals. Then too, it is at this stage that the campaign truly needs to be managed. Will you feel confident assigning that responsibility to an agency that is offsite, to people you see only periodically? Or, would you prefer to have a solid generalist on staff, someone with whom you can meet whenever you choose, to oversee the agency’s effort? One is not necessarily better than the other. It is truly a matter of personal style and preference.

Should you decide to retain an agency, here are some questions to ask. Have you ever worked on an account in this field before? There is both pro and con on this. Is our account conflictual with any other account in the agency? Can you provide references we can check? Who are your clients? With whom in the agency will we be working? Sometimes the person who makes the presentation is not the person who will service your account. You must have rapport with your contact. How will you position our product service?

In accessing the company, look for open and honest answers. Look for distinguished clients, a successful track record, strong creative concepts, a talented staff, energy, enthusiasm, flexibility, and ambition. Also look at how the agency plans to correlate your public relations and advertising activities. When they are cohesively planned and utilize the same theme, they cross index and cross collateralize and provide maximum visibility for minimal expenditure.

As far as budget appropriation is concerned, agencies work in several ways: an hourly fee, a per-project fee, or a monthly retainer. Ask for a quotation and get several estimates. Plan to spend more on a new product service launch than on an established one. Do appropriate an amount annually for public relations; stealing from another budget does not serve any area of the company well.
