Original Story

Thursday, November 16, 2006

Buffalo, New York —A proposed hotel that was supposed to be built at the corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo, New York is apparently off the table. The former proposal was going to be called The Elmwood Village Hotel and would have consisted of 72 rooms and cost between $7 to $10 million American dollars to build.

Today several unknown individuals were seen removing a sign that was dedicated to the “Elmwood Village Gateway,” which signifies the beginning of the Elmwood Village at the formerly proposed project’s location.

Nearly an hour later the men replaced the sign with a different and unexpected sign: “For Sale: 5 commercial parcels and 1 carriage house, By: Owner.” Those 5 “parcels” are 1109-1121 Elmwood and 999 Forest Avenue, which is located in an illegal alley, according to the City of Buffalo, behind the 5 other properties on Elmwood. Hans Mobius owns all properties named in the sale.

Sam Savarino, CEO of Savarino Companies never owned the properties and has repeatadly told Wikinews in exclusive interviews that he still had a “contract to buy the properties” and on October 2, 2006 told Wikinews in an exclusive interview that he “extended” the “agreement to purchase the property[s] and will have it under contract for what we hope is a sufficient period of time.”

“He [Mobius] is undoubtedly concerned because he has lost some tenants and is a bit impatient. I think he has properly portrayed the situation,” said Savarino in an exclusive interview with Wikinews.

Savarino also says that there may be “legal issues” to work out now, before anything else can move forward, regarding the proposal.

“There are some legal complexities that must be sorted out before anything can happen there,” added Savarino.

The welcome sign was; however, not removed entirely. The sign was placed, facing the same direction of north, on the side of the Forest Plaza Art Gallery, a new art gallery located on the corner of Forest and Elmwood.

Nancy Pollina, owner of Don Apparel which was located at 1109 Elmwood, but closed on October 14, 2006 considers this a possible “victory” in regards to the lawsuit filed against the hotel to stop it from being built, alleging that several laws were broken, including not performing an Environmental Impact Study before the proposal was approved by the city, during its approval and the proposal was “rushed.” Patricia Morris, who operates Don Apparel with Pollina, Angeline Genovese and Evelyn Bencinich, owners of residences on Granger Place which abut the rear of the proposed site, Nina Freudenheim, a resident of nearby Penhurst Park, and Sandra Girage, the owner of a two-family residence on Forest Avenue less than a hundred feet from the proposed hotel’s sole entrance and exit driveway, were also plaintiffs in the lawsuit. They filed the suit with a lawyer representing them, Arthur J. Giacalone, on April 25, 2006 in New York State Supreme Court, but the case has never gone to a courtroom.

Giacalone believes that a press release issued in July regarding the project was nothing but a statement to “save face,” but that the placement of the for sale sign might be a way of convincing Savarino to speed up the sale of the properties.

“I thought all along that Savarino’s July press release might be no more than an effort to save face. But we have no way of knowing. Similarly, Mobius might have put the for-sale sign up in an attempt to pressure Savarino into closing the deal. There’s no way to tell,” said Giacalone in an exclusive interview with Wikinews.

In regards to the lawsuit, Giacalone thinks it may now be in “limbo.”

“The lawsuit still sits in limbo,” added Giacalone.

Canada, EU, UK, US impose sanctions on Belarus over Ryanair hijacking

Wednesday, June 23, 2021

On Monday, Canada, the European Union (EU), the United Kingdom and the United States imposed new sanctions on senior officials and entities in Belarus over the May 23 diversion of a Ryanair flight and subsequent arrest of dissident journalist Roman Protasevich and his girlfriend Sofia Sapega, as well as “repressive practices” committed by the Belarusian government.

The joint action was aimed at putting pressure on Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko’s “regime”, a joint statement read, citing “continued attacks on human rights, fundamental freedoms, and international law”, as well as the “politically motivated” arrest of Mr Protasevich and Ms Sapega.

The statement went on to express support for “the long-suppressed democratic aspirations of the people of Belarus”, calling for Belarusian co-operation in investigations into the incident, the release of all political prisoners, adherence to the recommendations of an expert mission by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), of which Belarus is a participating state, and OSCE-facilitated dialogue between the government and opposition.

The circumstances surrounding the forced landing of Ryanair flight FR4978 from Lithuania to Greece in Minsk, the Belarusian capital, are contested. As reported by Sky News, state media says the diversion was due to threat of explosives on board, a claim Global Affairs Canada calls “dubious and still unverified”.

Total restrictive measures varied between the countries and regional organisation. Canada sanctioned 17 new individuals for a total of 72, and five entities described in a press release as being “due to the ongoing disregard for human rights demonstrated”.

The EU, through the Council of the European Union, extended its restrictive measures by 78 individuals and eight entities related either to human rights violations or the “forced and unlawful landing”, to a total of 166 individuals and fifteen entities. Those who are impacted, including judges, businesspeople, university rectors and government ministers, will be subject to an asset freeze, and persons affected prohibited to enter or transit through EU territory.

The measures also prohibit EU citizens and companies from making money available to the designated. According to the Associated Press, EU policy chief Josep Borrell said the measures “are going to hurt […] the economy of Belarus heavily”. The decision to affect entities, not just individuals, foreign minister of Germany Heiko Maas said, will impact the “economic areas that are of particular significance for Belarus and for the regime’s income”; those targeted include the export of fertiliser ingredient potash, and those of tobacco and petroleum.

The United Kingdom furthered sanctions levied with Canada in September on eight Belarusian officials, including Lukashenko, his son, and senior government members. New restrictions include eleven individuals and two entities, which are henceforth subject to asset freezes and travel bans.

Among those targeted includes petroleum exporter BNK (UK) Ltd, which, according to its 2019 report of the director presented to Companies House, “provides intermediate services to oil sector companies” in Belarus. According to a government press release, UK foreign secretary Dominic Raab said “cutting off oil export revenue streams” was one way the government would “hold the [Belarusian] regime to account”.

The United States, through the State Department and Office of Foreign Assets Control under the Treasury Department, imposed visa restrictions on 46 Belarusian individuals holding “key positions” in the country, according to a press release, and added 16 individuals and five entities to a designated list. In addition to concerns of the country’s “transnational repression” and “affronts to international efforts”, the US also cited the “fraudulent” 2020 Belarusian presidential election as cause for the sanctions’ imposition.

The timing of the sanctions was questioned by Belarusian Nikolai Shchekin on state media network the Belarusian Telegraph Agency, noting the date June 21 is one day before the anniversary of the start of the German invasion of the Soviet Union, or the “Great Patriotic War”. According to CNN, the US attempted to announce its sanctions earlier, prior to a meeting between US president Joe Biden and president of Russia Vladimir Putin, but was held up by the EU.

Greece wins 2005 Eurovision song contest

Sunday, May 22, 2005

The Eurovision Song Contest 2005 was won yesterday by the entry from Greece, Helena Paparizou, singing My Number One, second place going to the entry from Malta and third place going to Romania.

The competition was held in Palace of Sports in downtown Kiev, Ukraine, after its entry, Ruslana, had won the 2004 contest singing Wild Dances. Semi-finals had been held on May 19, 2005. 10 out of 25 countries with the highest scores in the semi-finals then joined 14 already pre-qualified countries in the final. Both events were televised across Europe.

More than 6000 spectators attended the event. Organisers hope that it will boost Ukraine’s image abroad and increase tourism, while the country’s new government hopes that it will also give a modest boost to the long-term goal of acquiring European Union membership.

Bulgaria and Moldova took part for the first time while Hungary returned after a hiatus since 1998. Lebanon had been expected to make its debut appearance but decided to withdraw. For the first time in the history of the contest, Ireland failed to qualify.

The hosts for the event were Maria “Masha” Efrosinina and DJ Pasha, a TV Presenter and Radio DJ.

Finally, it’s important to note most countries now choose to sing in English rather than their native language, since rule changes permit the singer to perform in any language they want.It is interesting to note that Spain, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, who all automatically qualify for the final by right of paying the bulk of the budget of the European Broadcasting Union (Eurovision’s parent organisation) all finished in the bottom four positions.

Alternative Design Concepts}

Submitted by: Rakesh Gaikwad

Traditionally roman blinds are made from medium weight cotton fabrics which are durable and robust, however with the general public and interior design stylists realising the potential roman blinds made with delicate sheer fabrics such as voile and organza, the use of sheer fabric roman blinds has become an extremely popular way to dress a window and remove the necessity of net curtaining when privacy is required. Many of these fine fabric roman blinds are available with beads and sequins sewn onto them or incorporated into pointed tassel ends to move away from the normal straight edges.

Roman blinds made from sensuous faux silks are available in a wide variety of bright vibrant colours as well as dark sexy blacks and browns. These are ideal for creating a romantic atmosphere and when coordinated with subtle table lighting and boudoir scatter cushions look incredibly funky and fashionable.

Available in a wide variety of width and length sizes roman blinds are suitable to use for windows of any size. Long narrow, windows typically found on a landing or stairs can be effectively dressed with a roman blind as the cleat can be fixed low down for easy operating. It is possible to buy roman blinds which offer a choice to which side the draw strings are on, alternatively they can be changed over by re-threading the blind. Roman blind kits provide all the necessary parts, except the fabric, required to make a bespoke roman blind at home, the choice of which side the draw cords are fixed is then simply a matter of personal choice.

Many ready made roman blinds come complete with a lining or interface to help reduce fabric fading and to help provide both heat retention and heat loss from a room. Made to measure roman blinds offer a wide choice of different interfacing and fabric choices.

The different fabric designs and patterns of roman blinds are vast which enables home dcor and furnishings to be matched or coordinated with ease. An alternative style of roman blind which offers a soft curvaceous look to a window are roman blinds which have contrasting edges which are decorated with ribbon bows, the bows add a touch of delicate femininity to a room.

For a natural look wood weave roman blinds offered in a variety of different woods provide a warm atmosphere to a room and some unusual diffused light effects during the day. This style of roman blind is popular for use in conservatory and sun rooms and rooms which overlook gardens, being the ideal way to bring a touch of nature right inside a room.

Roman blinds are extremely easy to fit, as they need no specific rails or tracks, they are usually hung or suspended from two or three ceiling fixings depending on the width of the blind and the weight of the fabric used. With the huge assortment of different fabric styles and designs there are roman blinds available to suit all budgets, each providing a very practical and economical way to dress a window.

Man auctions his life on eBay, is disappointed at sale price

Monday, June 30, 2008

After auctioning off his entire life on eBay for A$399,300 (244 912.148) Ian Usher says he is “a little bit disappointed” at the final selling price.

The 44-year-old British immigrant living in Perth, Australia, put all of his worldly belongings up for sale on the popular auction website, including his three-bedroom house and all its contents, his car, motorcycle, jetski, skydiving gear, and his job at a rug store, for which he offered a two week trial period. He even offered introductions to his friends living in Perth.

Usher made the decision to sell his life after his five-year marriage suddenly ended. On his website, alife4sale.com, he explains that “despite my life being busy and fulfilled, I still miss my wife so much. Everything in my home is a reminder of the wonderful past we shared. So, after a year in this house I decided that it is time to sell it and move on.”

It was as much about moving on as it was about selling it for as much as I could get.

During the 7 day auction, which ended on Sunday, there were several bogus bids which brought the sale price as high as A$2.2 million, but the final price ended up at A$399,300, which was around A$100,000 less than Usher had hoped for. “I’m a little bit disappointed, but I’m still excited. It’s still enough to move forward and do what I said I was going to do, which is move on to the next part of my life,” Usher said. “It was as much about moving on as it was about selling it for as much as I could get.”

According to Reuters, the winning bidder, whose username is “mslmcc”, also lives in Australia, and has a 100 percent feedback rating. Usher says he hasn’t yet been able to figure out who the buyer is, because of the TV crews lined up in front of his home. “I’m trying to find some time to get on the computer and check it out … I haven’t looked (up) anything about them yet,” he said.

Usher now plans to go off in search of a new life. His initial plan, as he describes on his website, was to just walk out his front door with just his wallet and a passport and board a train, with no idea of where to go. He has since launched 100goals100weeks.com, which will document his attempt to complete 100 of his life goals in a span of 100 weeks. Some of these goals include getting a pilot’s license, climbing the Eiffel Tower, learning to play the didgeridoo, and shaking hands with billionaire Richard Branson.

“I was pretty aimless when I started this, and I had a vague notion of adventure, but I’ve come up with a much more solid plan, which is still very adventurous,” Usher says. He invites anyone who is interested to join him on his adventures.

President of National Association of Evangelicals resigns over gay sex scandal

Sunday, November 5, 2006

On November 2, Ted Haggard resigned from the presidency of the National Association of Evangelicals and his pastorship in the New Life Church after allegations that he repeatedly engaged in homosexual sex with a prostitute (Mike Jones) and used methamphetamine.

Haggard, a critic of gay marriage and homosexuality, is a leading social conservative voice. Author Jeff Sharlet reported that Haggard “talks to. . . Bush or his advisers every Monday” and opines that “no pastor in America holds more sway over the political direction of evangelicalism.”

In his church, Haggard preached “we don’t have to debate about what we should think about homosexual activity, it’s written in the Bible.”

On Wednesday Haggard denied knowing the male escort, Jones, but admitted Friday that he had summoned the escort to give him a massage in a Denver hotel room and bought methamphetamine from him. He then followed up and said, “I was tempted, I bought it, but I never used it.”

Shawn Marion Foundation, Helping Single Parent Families

By Todd A. Smith

Shawn Marion knows exactly what it feels like to struggle. The 10-year NBA veteran knows how it feels to spend days hungry while his mother, Elaine, worked her fingers to the bone so she could raise four children as a single mother. He knows how it feels to have sneakers so old and worn that he had to avoid puddles so that the socks protruding through the soles of his shoes would not get soaked because his mother could not afford new sneakers.

Marion also knows the odds that were against him as he set his sights on a career in the NBA as a high school student. He remembers the naysayers and the distracters that discouraged his dream from junior college at Vincennes to his junior season at UNLV. But most vividly, Marion remembers when his dream became a reality and he was able to bless his mother with a brand new house, in commemoration for all she had done throughout his early years.

Your dreams come true, youre drafted into the NBA and all of a sudden you have the money and the means to buy something, so why not buy your mother a house, said Marion.

When speaking of his mother, it is apparent that he understands that his dreams could not have come true without the sacrifices of this wonderful woman.

She was trying to put food on the table to feed us, Marion told Regal Magazine. She was a strong woman. She worked three jobs for a long time. I didnt always have everything I wanted, but I was good.

It is that same memory that led to the formation of the Shawn Marion Foundation, which assists single-parent families through vocational training and adult scholarships, in an effort to help and inspire people who are experiencing similar situations.

Four kids, being a single [parent], youre definitely gonna need support, Marion added. The support that his family needed growing up is the same support he is giving single-parent families through the Shawn Marion Foundation.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6nB_-wNIUI[/youtube]

In many foundations, the celebrity is just the figure-head who pumps funds into the organization but usually does not take a hands-on approach. When working with the Shawn Marion Foundation, you will definitely work with the organizations namesake. The reason for his involvement is simple, he has been there and he is determined to inspire others who are jumping the same hurdles to never give up on their dreams, because he is living proof that dreams do become reality.

Many criticize athletes for not taking a stance and making a difference in the communities around them, but those critics must have never met Marion, nicknamed The Matrix by two-time NBA champion Kenny Smith. Through the Shawn Marion Foundation, The Matrix has consistently returned to his hometowns of Chicago and Clarksville, Tenn. to give back. Turning a former drug house into a community center with an after-school program, with computers and a basketball court and giving funding to his old elementary school, which faced a budget shortfall because of declining tax revenue and rebuilding the playground for the students.

I could give some money to someone elses charity and let them do the work, Marion explained. But thats not the point. The point is I grow up in poverty, it is what is. It was times when it was really bad and it was times, it wasnt bad. But at the same time, I got a taste of it.

Marion added: I know what it feels like to grow up with the same pair of sneakers for a period of timeAnd to have to go to the Laundromat to do your laundry once a week. And if you dont have nothing in the refrigerator, you have to wait to your mama comes home to fix you something. I know what it feels like to have nothing. So, to come from nothing to something is a blessing. I take none of this for granted.

Marion speaks fondly of his humbled beginnings, recalling having only one telephone in his mothers house and a one-hundred foot extension cord that allowed everyone in the home to use the telephone. He recalls playing Super Nintendo in high school, never dreaming that one day he would be playing video games featuring him.

The Matrix remembers the statistics that were stacked against him in coming out of his school, which stated that only one in 75,000 high school basketball players actually make it into the NBA. Although he took the road less traveled, playing two years in junior college and one year at UNLV, Marion became that one.

Although his dream came true, he encourages everyone to pursue their own dream. Marion is also realistic when working with children through the Shawn Marion Foundation, encouraging all to pursue higher education just in case they are not as fortunate as him to become that one in 75,000.

Furthermore, he practiced what he preached while attending college, becoming male student-athlete of the year while in junior college. The four-time NBA All-Star majored in communications while in college.

Although Marion is quick to acknowledge his blessings that led him to the NBA, he is also quick to point out the blessed career he has had playing with extraordinary talent on all three former teams (Suns, Heat and Raptors) that he has played for. That trend continues this year as he joins the Dallas Mavericks, and is reacquainted with a former teammate from the Suns, point guard Jason Kidd.

J. Kidd is a monster, Marion told Regal Magazine. I came in with J. Kidd. He was one of my favorite players prior to coming into the league just to watch.

Despite playing with great players and having an All-Star career, with career averages of 18.3 points, 10.1 rebounds and 1.89 steals per game, the one thing that has been elusive in Marions career is that much-desired NBA championship ring.

However, with a team as talented as the 2009-10 Mavericks, this year is as good as any to put the icing on an already impressive cake.

We have a very nice team this year. We have an older group of guys, were seasoned. Hopefully, with the group of free agents we brought in this summer, were gonna be decent. Were just trying to add to the core they have already.

The Maverick core consists of perennial stars Kidd, Dirk Nowitzki, Josh Howard and Jason Terry. With The Matrix, Tim Thomas, Drew Gooden, Kris Humphries and Quinton Ross joining this versatile mix, expect an exciting season for the team from Big D.

When asked what it is like working for outspoken Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, Marion replied: (Cuban) is amazing. Hes really a good owner. Hes for his players, and you gotta respect that.

And anyone meeting Marion has to respect him. When asked how he wants to be remembered as a player, he simply replied he wanted to be remembered as one of the best small forwards the NBA has ever seen. It is safe to say, because of his work through the Shawn Marion Foundation, he will also be remembered as one of the leagues most impressive philanthropists as well.

Latest trial of the One Laptop Per Child running in India; Uruguay orders 100,000 machines

Thursday, November 8, 2007

India is the latest of the countries where the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) experiment has started. Children from the village of Khairat were given the opportunity to learn how to use the XO laptop. During the last year XO was distributed to children from Arahuay in Peru, Ban Samkha in Thailand, Cardal in Uruguay and Galadima in Nigeria. The OLPC team are, in their reports on the startup of the trials, delighted with how the laptop has improved access to information and ability to carry out educational activities. Thailand’s The Nation has praised the project, describing the children as “enthusiastic” and keen to attend school with their laptops.

Recent good news for the project sees Uruguay having ordered 100,000 of the machines which are to be given to children aged six to twelve. Should all go according to plan a further 300,000 machines will be purchased by 2009 to give one to every child in the country. As the first to order, Uruguay chose the OLPC XO laptop over its rival from Intel, the Classmate PC. In parallel with the delivery of the laptops network connectivity will be provided to schools involved in the project.

The remainder of this article is based on Carla G. Munroy’s Khairat Chronicle, which is available from the OLPC Wiki. Additional sources are listed at the end.

New book links Bonds, Giambi and Sheffield to BALCO

Thursday, March 23, 2006

The new book Game of Shadows: Barry Bonds, BALCO, and the Steroids Scandal that Rocked Professional Sports, by Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams of The San Francisco Chronicle, is being released today. The authors not only implicate professional baseball celebrity Barry Bonds in the use of performance-enhancing drugs, but also say Gary Sheffield received human growth hormone and testosterone from Greg Anderson, Bonds’s personal trainer.

The book goes on to claim that Jason Giambi also took performance-enhancing drugs from Anderson. Bonds continues to insist that he did not realize his trainer was giving him steriods. He claimed in his grand jury testimony that he thought he was receiving flaxseed oil and an arthritis salve. Sheffield’s response to the claims was quite simple: when asked if the allegations made against him were true, his response was “Nope.”

Despite the book’s accusations of Sheffield and Giambi, it centers around Bonds and the founder of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative or BALCO, Victor Conte Jr. Conte is currently serving four months in prison for distribution of steriods and money laundering. It appears that the steroid controversy concerning Bonds will only intensify as he continues to march on towards the career home runs record, one of baseball’s most sacred records.
