Wikinews interviews Christopher Beyette, prince of the Principality of Vikesland

Thursday, July 10, 2008

Over the past few months, Wikinews reporter Joseph Ford has held several interviews with Kevin Baugh, president of the Republic of Molossia, a micronation located near Dayton, Nevada. This week, Ford had the opportunity to interview another intermicronational leader, Christopher Beyette, prince of the Principality of Vikesland, another micronation located in Manitoba.

At only three years old, the Principality is a relative newcomer to the intermicronational community.

When asked if he considers Vikesland a serious micronation, Prince Christopher said that his country is “a new nation project. Our goal is to eventually become an internationally recognized state with hopefully some sort of small sovereign land base.”

He went on to tell much more about Vikesland, which can be read in the interview below.

A Timeline Of The Migrations Of Israel}

(All dates are approximate.)

BC 2081,

In Genesis 15, Abraham asked God for a sign, and the sign that God gave him was the prediction that his descendants would sojourn in a country ‘not their own’ for 400 years, where they would become enslaved.

BC 1898

The fulfillment of the 400-year sojourn in Egypt began when Joseph was sold as a slave and taken to Egypt. On the basis of his interpretation of Pharaoh’s dream about seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine, Joseph was made Pharaoh’s business manager. This was a pretty good job. All 70 of his family moved to Egypt.

BC 1898-1432

Dan had cousins in the north of Canaan–the Phoenicians. (One translation for ‘Phoenicians’ is pa-hanic–which means ‘the house of Enoch’.) So Dan visited his cousins frequently during the 400 years and became the Phoenicians. And they had been travelling around in ships before the family ever went to Egypt.

BC 1859

Jacob died. The changes instituted by Joseph resulted in Pharaoh owning most of the land, money, cattle, and even the people of Egypt. Joseph’s job as the #2 man in Egypt improved.

BC 1806

Joseph died. His office passed to the tribe of Judah after his death, because Jacob had given Judah the leadership role when he parceled out the birthrights. The Israelites ruled for 250 (or maybe 300) years.

BC 1806-1600

Dan founded Argos, Troy, Athens, and Melitta in one excursion during this time. Since their family was ruling, they could come and go as they pleased. The royal line of Judah was through the twin sons of Tamar. (The first born was Zarah, and Pharez was born second.) Most of the Zaraites were already out of Egypt by the time of the enslavement. They left with Dan and founded Zaragoza in Spain

BC 1600

Regime change in Egypt changes status of Israelites.

BC 1446 Exodus from Egypt begins.

BC 1406

Coest of Israel begins.

BC 1375

Death of Joshua.

BC 1375-1043

Israel ruled by judges.

1200-1000

Tuatha de Danaan (tribe of Dan) takes over Ireland for 200 years.

BC 1043

Saul becomes king of Israel.

BC 1011

Death of Samuel.

BC 1010

Saul was succeeded by David.

BC 967

David was succeeded by Solomon.

BC 931

The Northern Kingdom secedes. The nation was divided into the ten-tribe northern kingdom, called the House of Israel, Ephraim, or Samaria, and the southern kingdom, called the House of Judah, who would soon be called Jews. This kingdom was made up of the tribe of Judah, the tribe of Benjamin, and some Levites.

BC 931

Rehoboam mustered an army of 180,000 men in the Southern kingdom.

BC 914

Abijah mustered an army of 400,000 (an increase of 220,000 men) in the southern kingdom.

BC 911

An army is mustered by King Asa of 580,000 men in the southern kingdom. Within twenty years there has been an increase in the army of Judah of 400,000 men. The only reasonable explanation of this increase in the population of the southern kingdom is that Jeroboam’s strategy failed, and that many of his subjects left the northern kingdom and moved to the southern kingdom.

BC 734-732

The first invasion of the Northern Kingdom by Tiglath- Pileser. The Assyrians called the captured Israelites Khumri (after king Omri). This was later corrupted to Gimira.

BC 729-686

The Simeonites continued to dwell in the Southern Kingdom and were there in the days of Hezekiah, king of Judah.

BC 722

The second invasion of the Northern Kingdom by Shalmaneser and Sargon.

BC 722

Samaria fell.

BC 710-590

Israelites, called Gimira by the Assyrians and Kimmeroii (Cimmerians) by the Greeks, moved into Asia Minor. They finally migrated to what is modern Ukraine.

BC 701

Sennacherib attacks Judah. Jerusalem was spared, but Assyrians captured forty-six cities and took 200,150 captives. BC 650-600 Israelites in Media became known as Scythians. They fought as mercenaries for various powers.

BC 676

Scythians and Mannaens attack Assyria.

BC 625

Babylonians, Elamites, Medes and Scythians continue to attack Nineveh.

BC 612

Nineveh falls.

BC. 513 – 512

Darius I of Persia tries again, but the Scythians won’t fight, so he gives up and goes home.

BC 600-500

Following the collapse of the Assyrians, the Scythians were driven north through the Dariel Pass (the Pass of Israel) in the Caucasus mountains by the Medes, and they settled in south Russia. A large group of these also moved East, beyond the Euphrates. These were called Sakka (Saka) and Iskuza by the Medes and Persians.

BC 530-301

Scythians re-conquered Canaan (ignoring Judah completely), but only held it for 29 years. Apparently they found out that their punishment was not complete, so they left. About this time, the Persians start applying pressure on Scythia.

BC 650-500

Cimmerians in Europe moved up the Danube and became known as Celts; the English translation of the Greek Keltoi.

BC 652

Cimmerians conquer Sardis, the capital of Lydia.

BC 500-100

The Celtic expansion from central Europe.

BC 586

Fall of Jerusalem to Babylon. Captives from Judah were taken to Babylon at that time.

BC 554-500

BC 283

Rome defeats the Senones at Picenum.

BC 279

Celts invade Thrace and Anatolia.

BC 275

Seleucids defeat the Galatian Celts.

BC 250-100

South Russia was invaded by the Sarmatians, who drove the Scythians into Germany. The Sarmatians were Assyrians. The Sarmatians would later settle in Prussia. Although the Sarmatians came out of Scythia, they were recognized as different from the Goths and Saxons by the Romans, who started calling the latter ‘german’ (meaning ‘genuine’),

BC 217-218

30,000 Celtic infantry and 4,000 Celtic cavalry join Hannibal’s army. They were (after all) related through Dan. Besides, their day job was fighting as mercenaries.

Chemical firm LyondellBasell collapses

Friday, January 9, 2009

 Correction — January 17, 2009

LyondellBasell did not collapse. Although the United States units and an affiliate registered in Germany filed for voluntary bankruptcy protection, the rest of the group, including the Netherlands parent, is operating normally. Sources:

  • “Press release: Non-U.S. Operations Not Affected By Chapter 11 Filing (English version)” — LyondellBasell, January 8, 2009
  • Ludwig Burger and Rupert Winchester. “LyondellBasell to exit Chap 11 in 1-2 yrs-paper” — Reuters, January 12, 2009

Global chemical manufacturer LyondellBasell — the third-largest private chemical company in the world — has collapsed. The firm filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States, as well as the Dutch equivalent. They had failed to meet a January 4 deadline on postponed debt payments, and talks with creditors failed.

Headquartered in The Netherlands, LyondellBasell is owned by private equity tycoon Len Blavatnik, who had already refused the company a loan to help deal with debt resulting from a $12.7 billion merger between Basell International Holdings and Lyondell Chemical to create LyondellBasell Industries.

The company had already appointed Kevin McShea from Alix Partners to restructure the firm. McShea was assigned speculatively prior to the bankruptcy filing. Access Industries, Blavatnik’s company, refused to extend credit as part of a loan deal brokered in March, a decision Lyondell Chemicals Company, a subsidiary of LyondellBasell, stated they were unhappy with.

LyondellBasell had postponed $280 million worth of interest payments, which Standard & Poor said placed it in “selective default” with a “rapidly weakening liquidity position”. S&P also said that LyondellBasell have debts of $26 billion in a report on the company prior to the firm’s collapse.

LyondellBasell responded with a press release, issuing the following statement: “Standard & Poor’s definition of ‘selected default’ related to our corporate credit rating should not be misinterpreted to suggest that LyondellBasell is currently in default of its bank agreements. As they stated in their press release, ‘This is a default in our opinion according to our definitions and criteria.’ LyondellBasell is not currently in default according to its agreements with its lenders.”

The company met with high oil prices shortly after the expensive merger. This was followed by a general tail-off in demand caused by the ongoing financial crisis. Investors were continuing to bet before the collapse that the firm would restructure under bankruptcy protection, leaving lenders with big losses, potentially over 90% of their investments. The cost of credit protection for LyondellBasell bonds had soared. The creditors include Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, ABN Amro and UBS.

On Thursday, an interim allowance was made by a judge for LyondellBasell to seek up to $2.167 billion of loans. There is also an emergency loan paid out of $100 million. As well as LyondellBasell, 79 affiliates have become insolvent. Citigroup has said the collapse will set them back $1.4 billion in unpaid debts.

Approaches On Specifically How To Have The Real Estate Market Work To For You}

Submitted by: Kendall Eayrs

It’s not that buying real estate can be very complicated. Purchasing real estate is not very difficult, but with very little confidence in the market and residential property values that rise and fall like the moving tides, a lot of homebuyers are just too unassured to invest their capital in a venture that may fail. That is specifically why you need to read these real estate tips.

Home Evaluation

An important tip for potential buyers of real estate is to exercise great care when selecting real estate agents and home evaluation professionals. Make certain to look for recommendations from those you trust, and take the time to verify qualifications and credentials. Buying a home is one of the most significant financial outlays in anyone’s life, and as a result it is crucial to enlist the aid only of those whose experience is thoroughly established.

A financial investment of $ 200 – $ 400 for a home inspection is really worth every cent. It will take about two to three hours to complete and will provide info on more than 400 items of the home that might be a future complication. This evaluation can save you thousands of dollars in repairs once you buy the house.

To ensure you receive an unbiased, independent evaluation of the property you’re thinking about buying, do your own research of home inspection companies. Don’t be afraid to question friends and acquaintances for referrals. As soon as you’ve got a list of companies, you can make some phone calls or send out emails, enabling you to compare fees and ask for references.

You should require a complete disclosure and have a home evaluation performed on the house. The seller can reveal info that they know about the house, but there could be a lot of things that the homeowner may be unaware of and the professional home inspector will be able to find them and point them out. This could possibly save you thousands of dollars in the long run.

If you are buying a home, it’s always a good idea to get a home evaluation done. A home inspection can inform you to any complications which might not be visible to the naked eye. These can be corrected by the owner prior to the real estate closing. Therefore, saving you time and money down the road.

Insisting on a home inspection can save you thousands of dollars. There are numerous things that can go wrong in a home that are not easy to see. One particular example is the electrical system. There can be problems in the wiring that you can not see by merely turning on a light. Having a real estate examiner come in, can help minimize the possibilities that you will get any unpleasant surprises, following the purchase.

When it is time to make an offer on a home that you want to buy, be sure to include in your offer that you want a home inspection to figure out if the house is in good shape or needs to have costly repair work. A home examiner will point out potential problems that will be important in your choice to pursue the purchase of the house.

When you think of purchasing a new home you should always have a home evaluation done. This way you find out ahead of time if there are any issues with the house so that you don’t end up purchasing something that will end up costing you tons of money to get fixed and up to code.

As a purchaser, you need confidence in the market and need to know that the choice you’re making is one that will be awarded in time. You won’t have this assurance if you act uninformed and buy just anything. The suggestions in this article are important if you want to approach the market with confidence.

Cleveland, Ohio clinic performs US’s first face transplant

Thursday, December 18, 2008

A team of eight transplant surgeons in Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA, led by reconstructive surgeon Dr. Maria Siemionow, age 58, have successfully performed the first almost total face transplant in the US, and the fourth globally, on a woman so horribly disfigured due to trauma, that cost her an eye. Two weeks ago Dr. Siemionow, in a 23-hour marathon surgery, replaced 80 percent of her face, by transplanting or grafting bone, nerve, blood vessels, muscles and skin harvested from a female donor’s cadaver.

The Clinic surgeons, in Wednesday’s news conference, described the details of the transplant but upon request, the team did not publish her name, age and cause of injury nor the donor’s identity. The patient’s family desired the reason for her transplant to remain confidential. The Los Angeles Times reported that the patient “had no upper jaw, nose, cheeks or lower eyelids and was unable to eat, talk, smile, smell or breathe on her own.” The clinic’s dermatology and plastic surgery chair, Francis Papay, described the nine hours phase of the procedure: “We transferred the skin, all the facial muscles in the upper face and mid-face, the upper lip, all of the nose, most of the sinuses around the nose, the upper jaw including the teeth, the facial nerve.” Thereafter, another team spent three hours sewing the woman’s blood vessels to that of the donor’s face to restore blood circulation, making the graft a success.

The New York Times reported that “three partial face transplants have been performed since 2005, two in France and one in China, all using facial tissue from a dead donor with permission from their families.” “Only the forehead, upper eyelids, lower lip, lower teeth and jaw are hers, the rest of her face comes from a cadaver; she could not eat on her own or breathe without a hole in her windpipe. About 77 square inches of tissue were transplanted from the donor,” it further described the details of the medical marvel. The patient, however, must take lifetime immunosuppressive drugs, also called antirejection drugs, which do not guarantee success. The transplant team said that in case of failure, it would replace the part with a skin graft taken from her own body.

Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, a Brigham and Women’s Hospital surgeon praised the recent medical development. “There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Leading bioethicist Arthur Caplan of the University of Pennsylvania withheld judgment on the Cleveland transplant amid grave concerns on the post-operation results. “The biggest ethical problem is dealing with failure — if your face rejects. It would be a living hell. If your face is falling off and you can’t eat and you can’t breathe and you’re suffering in a terrible manner that can’t be reversed, you need to put on the table assistance in dying. There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Dr Alex Clarke, of the Royal Free Hospital had praised the Clinic for its contribution to medicine. “It is a real step forward for people who have severe disfigurement and this operation has been done by a team who have really prepared and worked towards this for a number of years. These transplants have proven that the technical difficulties can be overcome and psychologically the patients are doing well. They have all have reacted positively and have begun to do things they were not able to before. All the things people thought were barriers to this kind of operations have been overcome,” she said.

The first partial face transplant surgery on a living human was performed on Isabelle Dinoire on November 27 2005, when she was 38, by Professor Bernard Devauchelle, assisted by Professor Jean-Michel Dubernard in Amiens, France. Her Labrador dog mauled her in May 2005. A triangle of face tissue including the nose and mouth was taken from a brain-dead female donor and grafted onto the patient. Scientists elsewhere have performed scalp and ear transplants. However, the claim is the first for a mouth and nose transplant. Experts say the mouth and nose are the most difficult parts of the face to transplant.

In 2004, the same Cleveland Clinic, became the first institution to approve this surgery and test it on cadavers. In October 2006, surgeon Peter Butler at London‘s Royal Free Hospital in the UK was given permission by the NHS ethics board to carry out a full face transplant. His team will select four adult patients (children cannot be selected due to concerns over consent), with operations being carried out at six month intervals. In March 2008, the treatment of 30-year-old neurofibromatosis victim Pascal Coler of France ended after having received what his doctors call the worlds first successful full face transplant.

Ethical concerns, psychological impact, problems relating to immunosuppression and consequences of technical failure have prevented teams from performing face transplant operations in the past, even though it has been technically possible to carry out such procedures for years.

Mr Iain Hutchison, of Barts and the London Hospital, warned of several problems with face transplants, such as blood vessels in the donated tissue clotting and immunosuppressants failing or increasing the patient’s risk of cancer. He also pointed out ethical issues with the fact that the procedure requires a “beating heart donor”. The transplant is carried out while the donor is brain dead, but still alive by use of a ventilator.

According to Stephen Wigmore, chair of British Transplantation Society’s ethics committee, it is unknown to what extent facial expressions will function in the long term. He said that it is not certain whether a patient could be left worse off in the case of a face transplant failing.

Mr Michael Earley, a member of the Royal College of Surgeon‘s facial transplantation working party, commented that if successful, the transplant would be “a major breakthrough in facial reconstruction” and “a major step forward for the facially disfigured.”

In Wednesday’s conference, Siemionow said “we know that there are so many patients there in their homes where they are hiding from society because they are afraid to walk to the grocery stores, they are afraid to go the the street.” “Our patient was called names and was humiliated. We very much hope that for this very special group of patients there is a hope that someday they will be able to go comfortably from their houses and enjoy the things we take for granted,” she added.

In response to the medical breakthrough, a British medical group led by Royal Free Hospital’s lead surgeon Dr Peter Butler, said they will finish the world’s first full face transplant within a year. “We hope to make an announcement about a full-face operation in the next 12 months. This latest operation shows how facial transplantation can help a particular group of the most severely facially injured people. These are people who would otherwise live a terrible twilight life, shut away from public gaze,” he said.

After killing wife and children, police officer commits suicide in Noyon, France

Wednesday, September 13, 2017

A police officer has shot and killed his wife and two of their children at the train station in the French city of Noyon in the department of Oise, the local prosecutor said, after the wife had informed the officer of her intention to separate from him. Their sons were aged three and five; a third child, twin to the five year old victim, survived the attack and is in the care of child services. The killings took place around 11:30 local time (0930 UTC) on Sunday.

The wife, born in 1983, called the gendarmes (police) in the morning, and they arrived to find her explaining to their five children about the domestic argument which had escalated. The husband returned while the police were present, and they reported he seemed calm and did not interfere with the children being moved to a neighbor’s home, so they departed. The woman reportedly chose to leave her house when her husband was not there, and headed to the station, where the husband awaited them armed.

After assassinating his family, the police officer committed suicide. The wife’s family lived in Guiscard, near Noyon. The station at Noyon was closed after the incident. Late on Sunday, the police were searching for a witness who escaped after observing the events.

Peruvian necklace identified as oldest gold artifact in the Americas

Tuesday, April 1, 2008

The oldest known gold artifact in the Americas is a necklace from Peru, according to University of Arizona anthropology professor Mark Aldenderfer. The necklace comes from a village in the Jiskairumoko range near Lake Titicaca and consists of gold that had been hammered and rolled into nine cylindrical beads, then strung with turquoise on a wool string.

Radiocarbon dating places the manufacture of the necklace from 2155 to 1936 B.C., which makes this item about 600 years older than the next oldest gold artifact that has been discovered the Americas and the oldest example of metalworking of any kind in the Americas.

Gold metallurgy is almost always associated with agricultural societies. Since the materials used in the necklace are not found in the Titicaca basin, the existence of the necklace implies the region had trade routes and a hereditary elite.

Although this discovery was made in 2004, Professor Alenderfer and his team delayed publication in order to have the gold chemically analyzed and to minimize the risk of looters damaging the site before excavation was complete.
