The Boxer Dog. A Hunter And Baby Rolled In To One Dog Breed

By John E Adams

The Boxer is a dog breed instantly recognizable and quite memorable even to the casual observer.

With its heavy shoulders and erect carriage, this is an older breed of dog that has a great deal of deserved popularity in the United States and in Europe.

The Boxer, with its athletic build, is clearly descended from hunting and sporting dogs, and its history goes back more than one hundred years.

In Germany, the first Boxer dogs were developed from crosses between the extinct dog breed known as bullenbeissers and bulldogs.

This breed was intended to be a hunter’s dog, its main job being to hold the prey still until the hunters appeared on the scene.

From this practice, it is easy to see where the the boxer’s discipline and strength come from.

In the early 1900s, the Boxer was introduced to America and recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1904.

In World War I, the Boxer was one of the many breeds of dog that saw action on the European front.

And like German Shepherds and Rottweilers, they soon became known for their cool heads under fire, their endurance and their willingness to cooperate.

During the war, Boxers were used as attack dogs, guard dogs, and pack carriers, but the position in which they may have done the most good might have been in their roles as message carriers.

Boxers could manoeuvre through dangerous territory with more success than could humans and their efforts on the field saved countless lives. After the war, many boxers were adopted by returning soldiers and thus boxers were popularized has family dogs.

The Boxer breed is known to be very energetic and playful, although this can translate to high spirits that make the dog difficult to control.

They are considered to be a fairly intelligent dog breed and between this and their headstrong nature, boxers respond much better to positive reinforcement than they do to punishment.

Some Boxer dogs also need some extra socialization to be made reliable around other dogs and strangers; this breed does have a reputation for territoriality.

“In terms of health, Boxers suffer from the same thing that many larger, heavier dog breeds do”

They are prone to hip dysphasia and allergies as well as heart conditions and gastric dilatation. Due to the unique shape of their head, they do poorly with heat and high humidity and care must taken to make sure that this breed does not overly exert itself during a heat wave.

Otherwise, they are active dogs who require a fair amount of exercise, although young animals should not be over exercised for fear of damaging still-developing bones. When they reach adulthood, boxers make great jogging companions.

Boxers are known to be excellent around children, if suspicious and wary of strangers.

And with their speed, strength and alertness, they make good guard dogs. They are an extremely versatile breed and they are equally comfortable working as police dogs, service animals and herders and it is this trait that cements their popularity.

The AKC lists The Boxer dog as the seventh most popular breed in the United States

Researchers discover high temperature enables more efficient hydrogen generation

Sunday, November 28, 2004

A more efficient way to produce useable hydrogen has been demonstrated by researchers. It uses very high-temperature electrolysis to separate hydrogen from water, so that hydrogen may be used for energy production.

Electrolysis is one method by which laboratories and factories produce hydrogen. An electrical current is passed through water, breaking it down into hydrogen and oxygen gas, which are then collected above the water reservoir.

Researchers in Salt Lake City, Utah, at Ceramtech Incorporated, in collaboration with workers at The Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory report that when water is superheated to 800 degrees Celsius, far less electricity is required to produce the same volume of hydrogen. The researchers envision that future nuclear fission plants could be used both to heat the water as part of their cooling system, and generate the needed electricity.

Concerns have been raised regarding the safety of such arrangements, however. Jeremy Desterhoft, an independent consultant on nuclear energy safety, warns the “elevated levels of radiation required to sufficiently lower the atomic separation point is beyond the current capabilities of any recent cooler.” He does not believe that economically viable cooling technology will be available for at least four to six more years.

Will Wikimedia “run on Sun”?

Wednesday, January 9, 2008

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

An internal Wikimedia communiqué was leaked over the weekend. Like many e-mails, the document is a chain of forwards, replies, and attachments. The attached Portable Document Format (PDF) file was from a PowerPoint presentation, entitled “Wikimedia Foundation: Past, Present, and Future”. The presentation is watermarked confidential, do not distribute, and details the Foundation’s recent financial, technical, and traffic history, outlines near-term forecasts for all three, and makes suggestions for slightly longer horizons as well. By itself the document led to several inter-connected news stories.

Keep Your Home Dry And Your Property Well Maintained With Leak Detection In Seattle, Wa

byadmin

Plumbing leaks come in a variety types. Some are more noticeable such as those that affect the outside sewer. In many instances these leaks will destroy your landscaping and ruin your yard. Sometimes you can easily locate these problems by the damage they do, but other times the leaks may be slow and difficult to find. Fresh water leaks can be even larger problems. Small leaks can dribble down the pipes without a loss of pressure while still causing extreme damage in your home. Leaking faucets and drains can cause wood rot in cabinets and floors resulting in thousands of dollars worth of repair costs.

The key to Leak Detection in Seattle, WA is the tools the plumber uses. For smaller ground based leaks and hard to find sewer problems the plumber can use Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). This may be a somewhat expensive tool for detection purposes, but it does allow the homeowner a little peace of mind when it comes time to dig up the broke pipes. In some instances the GPR is also useful for detecting fresh water leaks around foundation slabs and basement walls.

More useful tools for Leak Detection in Seattle, WA include an acoustic instrument designed to locate the leak by sound variance. Higher pressure water leaks in walls make definitive noises that plumbers can easily recognize. By pinpointing where these leaks occur they can reduce the amount of demolition required to make a repair. For harder to find leaks they can use an ultra-sensitive ground mic system to pick up the sounds and computerized equipment to filter out background noises. By removing any extraneous sounds they can easily locate the source of your leak.

Perhaps the most important tools that plumbers such as those at West Coast Plumbing, Pump and Filtration LLC can use are their eyes, ears and mind. By relying on years of experience and looking in the places where they would expect to find a leak they can often spot a problem with little trouble. One of the indicators they search for are water stains. Others include rotting wood, saturated drywall and seepage around any plumbing.

British white paper on public health

Wednesday, November 17, 2004

ENGLAND — UK Health Secretary John Reid has proposed widespread legislative and health care changes in a new white paper on public health released Tuesday. Titled “Choosing Health”, the paper details government plans to restrict smoking in public places, limit ‘junk food‘ advertisements to children, make available “lifestyle trainers”, campaign against sexually transmitted diseases and tobacco, and improve food labelling.

The white paper comes after extensive public comment that involved 150,000 people.

Smoking would be restricted in enclosed public spaces, restaurants, workplaces, and some pubs. The ban would be enacted gradually, affecting government and NHS buildings in 2006, enclosed public places in 2007, and private property in 2008. Permanent exemption would be granted to pubs that do not serve prepared food — though not at the bar — as well as private clubs, a decision that has provoked some to call the measure incomplete. Up to 90% of pubs are expected to be affected. The Scottish executive proposed a complete ban on smoking in enclosed public places last week, and Ireland has already banned smoking in pubs and restaurants.

Food advertisements targeted to children would be banned until 9pm, under the White Paper’s proposals. The restriction is a measure to tackle rising rates of childhood obesity. The government also intends to develop voluntary standards on food and drink advertisements to children with industry, only threatening legislation if an acceptable standard is not reached by 2007. Additionally, low income families would receive vouchers for fresh fruit, vegetables, milk, and infant formula. School lunches would also be held to stricter nutritional standards. Reid has warned that unless childhood obesity is tackled, “we face the prospect of children having shorter life expectancy than their parents”.

Food labelling would also be improved, with a “traffic light” system implemented. Packaged food would be evaluated based on its fat, sugar, and salt content.

The paper is unusual for suggesting a more holistic approach to health care, offering for the first time “lifestyle trainers.” The National Health Service would be funding with an additional £1bn to make people’s overall lives healthier, which is expected to save £30bn in preventable illness.

The paper additionally makes mention of reducing accidents, which affected 2.7m people last year and is a leading cause of child death, curb binge drinking, and reduce substance abuse among youths.

The paper has been criticized by many parties. The Tory Shadow Health Secretary has criticized the Labour government’s comprehensiveness and creation of a “new nanny state approach”. He has additionally described it as “gimmicks”. The Liberal Democrats have accused the government of not being comprehensive enough. It has also been criticized by the British Medical Association as being implemented too slowly, saying “When lives need saving, doctors act immediately”.

Mr. Reid has argued against the nanny state label, saying “In a free society, men and women ultimately have the right within the law to choose their own lifestyle, even when it may damage their own health. But people do not have the right to damage the health of others, or to impose an intolerable degree of inconvenience or nuisance on others … This is a sensible solution which balances the protection of the majority with the personal freedom of the minority in England”.

The full white paper “Choosing Health” can be read here.

New Jersey real estate investor charged with $2 million theft

Friday, March 20, 2009

The owner of a New Jersey real estate investment firm has been charged with using $2 million of his company’s money for construction at his home and other projects not related to work.

Gary Klein, owner of the Asbury Park-based REI Group Inc., surrendered himself to police after a Monmouth County grand jury indicted him on one count of theft by deception charges.

The charges were the result of a three-year investigation into his practices. Klein, 45, of Colts Neck Township, faces up to 10 years in state prison if convicted. Klein was released Friday after posting $75,000 bail.

Klein attracted clients by telling them he would invest their money in projects that would result in returns of 12 and 85 percent. Prosecutors said the actions mirrored those of a Ponzi scheme.

Robert Weir, Klein’s attorney, said the operation was not a Ponzi scheme, but legitimate business investments that went bad as the economy declined. Weir also said Klein hired a receiver to try and return the investors’ money once the investments started to go sour.

“It’s a shame that a business that experienced a turn in the real estate market is now being treated as a criminal problem. That was not Mr. Klein’s intent,” Weir said to The Star-Ledger.

Weir said the investments were used for building rehabilitation projects in Asbury Park and the construction of Florida condominium complexes, but authorities said Klein used the money to repay earlier investors who were cashing out, as well to help build his own home.
