The Training And Skills You Need To Become A Probation Officer

Oftentimes people have the need to give back. This may be done by helping those that are in need. This is one of the things that drive people to become probation officers. A probation officer helps offenders re-adjust to society.

After they receive the training and skills needed to become probation officers, they are rewarded with a career where they have the ability to change lives. They accomplish this by ensuring offenders stay on course with the conditions of their probation.

People on probation have set goals and rules on which the success of their rehabilitation depends. A probation officer is charged with seeing that persons assigned to probation adhere to these following goal and rules:

1. They must be employed, actively seeking employment, or register for school.

2. They must notify their probation officer of any changes in employment, phone number, or address.

3. They must not receive any new charges.


4. They may not leave the jurisdiction of the probation without first notifying their probation officer.

5. They must be present for all scheduled appointments or give 24 hours notice if unable to attend.

6. They must pay any restitution, court costs, fines, or other costs incurred by their judgment.

Statistics show that 86% of all those on probation violate or are otherwise repeat offenders.

Job requirements-

Probation officers should be in good physical and emotional condition. Most agencies require applicants to be at least 21 years old. Those convicted of felonies are not usually eligible for hire in this occupation. Prior employment in such areas as court services, corrections, drug abuse treatment, or counseling may aid towards any requirement for previous work experience.


Qualifications vary by agency, but a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice is one of the most common requirements. Most applicants are required to complete oral, written, psychological, and physical certification examinations for probation officer licensing.


Many probation officers work as trainees, on a probationary period of up to a year, before obtaining a permanent position.


A probation officer must have the following skills to be successful:

1. Excellent listening abilities since you need to absolve what is being said.

2. The skill to work effectively with others because you need to deal with offenders and their families.

3. The ability to communicate effectively. This is because you will be required to testify in the court of law. The last thing you need is to fumble around when the time comes.

4. The skill needed to write reports. The job requires you to write progress reports on the offenders you are working with. This report will go to courts and will be read by judges and lawyers.

5. You will need to know basic self defense skills. The criminal offenders you supervise can get violent sometimes. You need to be able to protect yourself before law enforcement officers get there.

Does Degenerative Disc Disease Require Surgery?

Degenerative disc disease almost never requires spine surgery. Generally speaking, spine surgery is an elected procedure that a patient will agree to when the discomfort and pain associated with a spinal condition become severe, and nonsurgical treatments prove ineffective. There are some instances when surgery is required to treat a spinal condition because spinal nerve compression is creating an emergency situation, but those are extremely rare cases.

Degenerative disc disease is inappropriately named, as it is not actually a disease. Instead, degeneration of the intervertebral discs is a condition that occurs naturally as we age. Degenerative disc disease refers to the weakening and flattening of intervertebral discs in the spinal column. For reasons not completely understood, this weakening and flattening of discs is more rapid, severe, and painful in certain individuals than in others.

Most people experiencing degenerative disc disease will find that the symptoms will dissipate and eventually disappear completely. It is recommended that those with persistent symptoms try nonsurgical treatment efforts before resorting to surgery. If nonsurgical methods have been tried for several months with no avail, patients may wish to look into surgery as a viable option to treat degenerative disc disease. There are several ways the spine can be operated upon, including open spine surgery and minimally invasive spine surgery.

Open Back Surgical Methods

Open spine surgery is an option many people take to relieve the pain and discomfort of degenerative disc disease. Open back surgery is the most traditional type of spine surgery. In open back surgery, large incisions are made in the back or torso so that the surgeon can access the affected area of the spine, and then the surgeon will remove degenerated tissue and other elements of the spine to increase the room where nerve roots and the spinal cord reside within the spinal column. Spinal fusion often follows, which is meant to stabilize the spine after parts of spinal anatomy are surgically removed.


There are individual types of open spine surgeries designed to solve individual problems. A few types of open back surgery include:

— Facetectomy – This procedure removes a facet joint (spinal joints that exist in pairs on each vertebra) to relieve pressure in the spinal column.

— Foraminotomy – In this procedure, a foramen (a nerve passageway) is enlarged to relieve pressure on a pinched nerve root.

— Laminectomy – This procedure removes all or part of the lamina (a plate on each vertebra protecting spinal canal and cord) to allow pinched nerves to be relieved.

— Laminotomy – This procedure increases the space between the lamina and spinal cord, and it allows nerves to travel through more easily.

— Discectomy – In this procedure, all or part of a damaged intervertebral disc is removed. After the disc is removed, it is common for the surgeon to fuse the two vertebrae that were separated by the disc so that they become one, immobile vertebra.

— Corpectomy – This is typically the most invasive spinal surgery of all. In this surgery, an entire vertebral body is removed from the back.

— Fusion – A fusion involves two vertebral bodies being fused together to function as one vertebra. Fusion is often done in conjunction with many of the procedures listed above.

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Techniques

Minimally invasive laser spine surgery is far different from open back surgery. This endoscopic surgical technique uses lasers, scopes, and other medical tools to target the specific cause of pain and remove or vaporize the source of the nerve compression. Incisions from laser spine surgery are less than one inch long.

Don’t Go Through the Process Alone

Don’t just assume that you need surgery to find relief from your degenerative disc disease symptoms. Talk to your doctor to see what the most effective treatment method for your case will be, and ask whether there are any nonsurgical treatments you haven’t tried yet that could help alleviate your pain.

If you truly feel that surgery is needed in your case, ask your doctor about the risks and benefits of spine surgery. Talk family and friends to seek out additional trusted opinions. Do some home research on spine surgeons and the different procedures available, and find the one that is the right fit for you.

An Exercise Plan For Older People Thats Proving Promising

So much of the time we hear about exciting research valuable scientific finds and then nothing more. Does anyone take what is learned in the lab and try and apply it to the real world to get results for real people?

Researchers at the University of South Carolina’s Arnold School of Public Health, collaborating with those at the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Rural Public Health (HSC) have done just that. The teams have recently completed evaluating data from the Active for Life program finding that exercise plans for older people that have been tested in the labs can actually be implemented by organizations in the community.

Active for Life is involved with taking promising research based techniques and bringing them into community settings.

This program, funded by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and based at the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Rural Public Health is intended to encourage physical activity among mature adults particularly middle aged and older people among us who lead a rather sedentary lifestyle.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tells us that Americans can increase their number of healthy years just by living a healthy lifestyle including eating right, not smoking and being more active.

Sadly, almost 64% of adults age 65 and older dont get the 30 minutes of exercise per day recommended to keep aging bodies in top form. The need to get more people up and moving is serious, which is why the team feels so strongly about delivering lab tested programs to people who can truly benefit.


The program involved studying data on participants in two Active for Life programs, Active Choices or Active Living Every Day.

Active Choices uses telephone coaching that follows a face to face meeting to create an activity plan, supply exercise logs and a pedometer and set goals for getting active in everyday life. The client receives regular mail and telephone pep talks for six months to help build habits and reinforce changes. The focus of this approach is an individualized program with lasting support, but the participant is also invited to regular health events

Active Living Every Day, the other program studied, involves a six month intervention that uses facilitated group sessions to help participants find ways to get regular activity into their daily routine. The goal is to learn how to find the time for 30 minutes of moderately intense activity on most days. The encouragement of the group, kept small by design, forms a wonderful support system that lasts long after the program ends.

The team of researchers, among them Dr. Sara Wilcox of the University of South Carolina, looked at data on just about 6,000 subjects from 12 different sites, who were part of these programs from 2003 to 2007.

The team found that the programs produced significant increases in the total amount of physical activity, and improvements in intensity, moderate to vigorous intensity in particular. Those in the Active Living Every Day also reported a lower level of stress and depression (probably due to the social support structure created around the study).

Participants in both programs showed more satisfaction with their body appearance and function, and small drops in weight as well.

“This initiative was different because it showed that community-based organizations could put these two programs in place, reach a large number of older adults, and produce meaningful changes.” says Wilcox.

Meaningful changes like:

– help controlling weight.

– contributing to healthy bones, muscles and joints.

– reducing falls among the elderly.

– lessening anxiety and depression.

– reducing the need for hospitalizations, doctor visits and medicines.

Even those who are frail or old could see an improvement in their condition by getting started with an exercise plan. Slowly and sensibly of course. The findings from the Active for Life program are published in the October issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
