Wikinews interviews Jim Hedges, U.S. Prohibition Party presidential candidate
Saturday, January 29, 2011
U.S. Prohibition Party presidential candidate Jim Hedges of Thompson Township, Pennsylvania took some time to answer a few questions about the Prohibition Party and his 2012 presidential campaign.
The Prohibition Party is the third oldest existing political party in the United States, having been established in 1869. It reached its height of popularity during the late 19th century. The party heavily supported the Eighteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which banned the sale of alcohol, and resulted in the US period known as Prohibition (1919–33). It was repealed in 1933. The party has declined since this period, but has continued to nominate candidates for the presidential election.
In 2003, the party split into two factions. Preacher Gene Amondson and perennial candidate Earl Dodge were nominated for the presidency by their respective factions. After Dodge’s death in 2007, the party reunified and named Amondson as its sole presidential nominee for 2008. During the election, Amondson was interviewed by Wikinews. He died in 2009, leaving an opening in the party for 2012.
Jim Hedges is a longtime Prohibition activist, who holds the distinction of the first individual of the 21st century (and the first since 1959) to be elected to a political office under the Prohibition Party banner. In 2001, he was elected as the Thompson Township tax assessor, and was re-elected to the post in 2005. He served until his term expired in 2010. Hedges declared his intent to run for the Prohibition Party presidential nomination on February 18, 2010. This marks his first run for the presidency.

Erica Powell, Nkrumah’s private secretary dies
Monday, July 16, 2007
Erica Powell OBE, who was the Private Secretary to Kwame Nkrumah, President of Ghana and later to Siaka Stevens, President of Sierra Leone, died last month at the age of 86. She died at Peterborough on June 5, 2007. She was made an MBE in 1958 and OBE in 1960.
Erica was born on March 15, 1921 at Brighton in Sussex England into a middle class family. She trained as a secretary and then as a teacher. She worked with Barclays Bank during World War II. She was the top candidate in the 1940 London Chamber of Commerce Shorthand and Typewriting exams.
In February 1952, the Crown Agents for the Colonies offered her the position of “Private Secretary (Female)/Gold Coast” which later became the title of her autobiography. She ended up working as the Private Secretary to the Governor of the Gold Coast, Sir Charles Arden-Clarke. While working for the Governor, she became a close friend and confidant of Kwame Nkrumah, then bidding for Ghana’s independence from the United Kingdom. Her closeness to Nkrumah led to her being dismissed in 1954 and being sent back to the UK.
Powell returned in January 1955 to work for Kwame Nkrumah, a position she held till 1965, a year before his overthrow. Her close relationship and loyalty to Nkrumah bred a lot of rumours both in Ghana and the UK. It also brought a lot of resentment from various quarters. She kept in contact with Nkrumah while he was in exile in Guinea until his death in April, 1972.
She later worked for Siaka Stevens as his private secretary from 1970 to 1979. She attended Nkrumah’s funeral in 1972 as part of the official Sierra Leone delegation.

byAlma Abell
Plastic surgery and cosmetic dentistry are two fields that are becoming more popular with both men and women. Common procedures include teeth whitening, straightening, fillings that fill cracks and veneers that hide gaps. Cosmetic Dentistry is needed to boost anyone’s self-esteem and confidence. A good dentist uses the most advanced tools in dental technology. This professional responds to all patient needs and sets up an individual plan. If you are interested in this cosmetic work, review the services of a reliable Dentist in Merchantville.
One type of cosmetic procedure is the installation of porcelain veneers. These custom-made devices are thin, natural-colored materials that improve the looks of teeth and prevent against further damage. For decades, the veneers have been used to make teeth look bright, white and perfect. The dentist bonds the veneers onto the front parts of the teeth. Choose a custom design based on several elements like color, size and length. Porcelain reflects light well and improves brightness. Porcelain resists major stains, but you still have to maintain the teeth and reduce your smoking or coffee consumption. To receive the best results, set up a thorough consultation.
Braces and clear teeth straighteners are made to straighten teeth over several months or years. Braces guarantee effective results, but the Invisalign product is becoming more popular. These teeth straighteners are clear to avoid detection and plastic to guarantee comfort. The dentist makes a custom-made set using lab images. The Invisalign aligners can be removed during meals and cleaned regularly.
Getting natural-colored fillings is another procedure that replaces dark, mercury fillings. The resin used in fillings can also cover dark spots that may or may not be affected by cavities. The dentist can fill in gaps or cracks anywhere on a tooth. The fillings last for many years, as long as the patient refrains from harsh, acidic foods.
A cosmetic dentist does all the procedures that improve the aesthetics of the teeth, gums and mouth. This professional can create veneers, brighten teeth, replace lost fillings and improve the overall smile. In a few office visits, make significant improvements to your appearance. Whether you have visibly yellowed teeth or an obvious gap, schedule an appointment before the problem worsens.

Mugabe says he’s open to talks with Zimbabwe opposition
Thursday, June 26, 2008
The day before Zimbabwe’s presidential runoff is to be held, President Robert Mugabe says he is open to discussion with the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), the opposition party that has decided to boycott what they and other African leaders have called a “sham election”.
On Wednesday, MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai had called for pre-election talks on forming a transitional authority. Mugabe, who had previously shown little interest in talks with the opposition, said at a campaign rally, “Should we emerge victorious … we will be magnanimous and say ‘let’s sit down and talk,’ and talk we shall.”
Earlier on Thursday, Tsvangirai said he would not participate in discussion after the election is held. “If the sham election goes ahead and Mugabe elects himself, how can I or the MDC negotiate with him?” Tsvangirai said in an interview with Britain’s The Times. “In essence, we’ll be negotiating with an illegitimate leader and we won’t do that.”
Mugabe left the offer for the MDC to either accept or reject, while warning against outside interference from the African Union. “The moment the outside world starts dictating, we will not proceed,” he said. Mugabe also said that violence had been committed by his ZANU-PF party as well as Tsvangirai’s party, and that the violence must stop.
Deputy Information Minister Bright Matonga later clarified the president’s comments. “What the president is saying to the MDC is that ‘You are Zimbabweans. We want you to be part of this. We are willing to talk to you but let’s finish this first.” Matonga did not say how soon after the election the talks would take place.
Many southern African leaders have called for Zimbabwe to postpone the election, but Matonga says to do so would be illegal. “The president has said today that the election will go ahead because to postpone it would violate Zimbabwe’s laws and he won’t do that,” he said.
Tsvangirai had been the only candidate facing Mugabe in the run-off election, before he announced on Sunday that he was withdrawing due to the threat of government-sponsored violence and intimidation against his party. Despite his withdrawal, election officials say his name will remain on the ballot, as they assert he missed the deadline to pull out.
While Tsvangirai fled to the Dutch Embassy for safety, other opposition members fled to the South African Embassy. Many opposition members have questioned South African president Thabo Mbeki‘s unwillingness to denounce Mugabe. Meanwhile, they welcomed the words of former South African president Nelson Mandela, who yesterday spoke of Zimbabwe’s “tragic failure of leadership” at a London fundraiser.
Zimbabwe’s government dismissed Mandela’s remarks, calling them a result of pressure from Western nations like Britain and the United States. Information Minister Sikhanyiso Ndlovu said, “I am condemning all Westerners for putting pressure on Mandela,” while at the same time calling Mandela a “courageous” statesman. Meanwhile, Tsvangirai said his party appreciates Nelson Mandela’s criticism. “It is something we cherish,” he said.
During his campaign, Tsvangirai has been detained by police a total of five times, and his party’s second-in-command, Tendai Biti, was charged with treason and publishing false statements. Biti was today granted bail after paying 1 trillion Zimbabwean dollars (USD$100) and surrendering his passport and the title to his home. He also must report to police twice a week.

Mascots for Vancouver 2010 Olympics based on native mythology
Tuesday, November 27, 2007
The mascots of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia were just announced. Based on mythological characters, they are Miga, Quatchi and Sumi.
Miga, a sea bear who lives in the ocean with her family pod near Tofino, and Quatchi, a young sasquatch, represent the Olympics, while Sumi represents the Paralympics that follow afterward.
A sea bear is a First Nations creature, part killer whale, part Kermode spirit bear. While illustrated as being taller than the other characters, the mascot costume of Quatchi is the same height as the other two characters.
The third mascot, Sumi, an animal-guardian spirit, is a Thunderbird that wears the hat of an orca. Sumi will be the mascot of the Paralympics.
In 2004, the Times Colonist suggested a marmot might be a good mascot, except for their winter hibernation. The organizers still chose one, named Mukmuk, as their “virtual only” counterpart.
After the Olympic logo design was leaked the day before the 2005 announcement, organizers were extremely tight lipped until today’s news conference at a Surrey school. They apparently didn’t do any development on the characters on internet-enabled computers, to ensure the images or information wouldn’t slip out.
The characters were designed by the Vancouver and Los Angeles-based Meomi Design. Their characters have been used as part of iGoogle, a customizable homepage option from Google, as well as Electronic Arts, Girls Inc., Time Out Magazine, Cyworld, Nick Jr., Bang-on Clothing, and CBC4Kids.
The Vancouver organizers have a CDN$46-million merchandising program; previous Olympics have made as much as $100 million from mascot-related products.
René Fasel, Chairman of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Coordination Commission commented that “The IOC welcomes these imaginative new additions to the Olympic Family as they take their place on the world stage today – a symbol of the Games and of Canada. We know that when Olympians, Paralympians and visitors from around the globe arrive in British Columbia at Games time, they will fall under the spell of these captivating characters.”
The characters first appearance will be at a Bay store in the Lower Mainland; HBC is a major sponsor of the Games. They will then make their way to schools, take a break through the Christmas season, and fly to Ottawa for the Winterlude festival.

British soldier killed in Afghanistan
Wednesday, July 5, 2006
The Ministry of Defence has named a British soldier from the 3 Para Battle Group who died while on patrol in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province.
The soldier, 19 year-old Private Damien Raymond Jackson, of South Shields, Tyne and Wear, came under fire from Taliban forces in the town of Sangin. He died while being given treatment.
His father, Daniel Jackson said: “I wish everyone to know just how extremely proud I am of my son Damien – of all that he has achieved in his lifetime and of the fact that he died, when duty called, protecting others, in the service of his country.
“A fine, upstanding South Shields lad, Damien was immensely proud to have achieved his ultimate ambition in becoming a member of the finest regiment in the British Army.”
He also condemned the government’s policy in Afghanistan, saying that UK forces are in “dreadful danger”. “We fully support the British Army in Afghanistan whilst in no way supporting or condoning a government policy, which has placed our young men and women in such dreadful danger.”
Private Jackson’s death means six British soldiers have died in the unstable Helmand region in the last four weeks. Since 2001 when operations began in Afghanistan, thirteen British soldiers have lost their lives.
On Saturday, two British soldiers were killed after a rocket-propelled grenade struck the headquarters they were in.
Prime Minister Tony Blair said he would give more resources to British troops to assist them in their fight against the Taliban, but he said the British Army has not yet made such a request.
“If they need more, we will make sure that they get more,” he told the House of Commons during Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday.
Along with the Conservative Party leader David Cameron, Mr Blair also commended the efforts of British soldiers by praising their “extraordinary and heroic job”.
“They are fighting a battle that I think is important not just for the security of Afghanistan. It is important for the security of the wider world,” the Prime Minister said.
Approximately 4,000 British soldiers are stationed in Afghanistan, and almost 3,000 of them work in Helmand Province.
In general, they are in Afghanistan to help train the country’s troops, provide security, and assist with reconstruction. As 20% of the world’s opium is produced in Helmand Province, the main task for troops there is to control drugs lords.

Wikinews interviews 2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor Candidate Wayne Tseng

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.
Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.
Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.
Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.
Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.
Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

On Saturday morning, the graduation ceremony for the class of 2022 took place at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Massachusetts. Graduate students of UMass Lowell this year, such as Raymond Wang, Simon Wang (no relation to Raymond Wang despite the shared surname), and Michaela Kiberstis went to the Tsongas Center and its big, crowded arena this morning to get their diplomas. Raymond and Michaela have known each other since last October, as they were classmates in the American Music History class in the Fall 2021 semester. In November, all 25 students in the class took turns, across multiple class sessions, to give presentations about various music topics covered in class. Michaela gave her presentation on the Drum Corps Associates, governing body for modern all-age and senior drum and bugle corps in North America, on November 18, 2021. Michaela spoke for 26 minutes that morning, from 10:23 a.m. until 10:49 a.m.
The ceremony’s morning session ended at 11:20 a.m. Eastern Time today. Raymond’s younger brother Bryan was not at all fond of the loud clapping and cheering of the excited crowd. While Raymond was totally fine with it, Bryan remembered the time he graduated from high school four years ago and said this is “exactly how [he] remembered it.” Bryan thinks hearing loud claps and cheers every ten seconds is a terrible way to mark the milestone of graduating. Bryan is simply bothered by the clapping and cheering in general. After the ceremony, Raymond, Bryan, and their parents got in the car, which was parked in the parking garage, and went to the Beijing Chinese restaurant in Lexington, Massachusetts to have lunch.
