Leasing Vs. Buying Landscaping Equipment

Submitted by: Alexander Madison

If you run a landscaping contracting company you most certainly are finding yourself consistently evaluating your equipment needs, trying to balance out your long-term financial golas with the demand for upgrading your fleet of skid loaders and other pieces.

You know all too well that your business s bottom line depends on the decision you make for the long and short term, which includes evaluating your equipment needs and making a choice to either buy or lease new pieces.

The good news is, you have plenty of options. The most complex part about the process is educating yourself about all of the financing options available to you with respect to a lease vs. buy transaction.

According to Industry Green magazine, economic shifts, changes in tax codes and the flow of government financing have permanently altered the way landscape contractors acquire new equipment. The summation: lower interest rates are making purchasing landscaping equipment more affordable, and new IRS tax codes linked to the 2008 federal stimulus package, makes it possible for businesses to deduct the full purchase price of equipment up to $250,000.

As a consequence, leasing has tapered off somewhat, as more and more business owners take advantage of these tax cuts, as well as bonuses for depreciation.

On the flip side, if you buy your equipment you must also take on the costs of maintenance, storage, insurance and depreciation. You may be able to set aside operating funds for the newest, fanciest piece of equipment today, but you run the risk of also seeing your appreciation value go down if you don t use the equipment as often as you though you would and you end up paying more to sustain it than it brings in.

Recovering the purchase costs of new equipment must play a significant role in your decision to lease vs. buy, otherwise, you could wind up with something fancy to show off to your customers but see you bottom line suffer in the process.

In some cases, it could be advantageous to rent a piece of equipment, test it out and ascertain whether you could regain your investment fast enough to make the purchase worthwhile. If the equipment turns out to be more of a drain on your company s bottom line than you expected, you are only out the rental fees.

In addition, when you rent a piece of equipment you don t have to worry about the costs of maintenance, as these are usually factored right into the rental agreement. Equipment rental and leasing costs on your financials are also an advantage over big ticket purchases, because, should you need a loan down the line for any reason you do not have the added debt load of a major equipment purchase.

Another option, which some landscape contractors find works to their advantage, is to go ahead and purchase a new piece of equipment such as a skid loader. Then, depending on the jobs they need the equipment for, they simply rent the different attachments required.

This makes the big-ticket purchase a little less expensive and provides an opportunity to utilize the equipment in a variety of ways without buying extra parts that you may wind up using once a year.

Recall of Thomas the Tank Engine toys due to lead-paint fears

Thursday, June 21, 2007

A recall issued last week for Thomas the Tank Engine toys made in China and containing lead-based paint, is the latest scare for consumers, and follows recent scandals involving Chinese-made pet food, pharmaceuticals, toothpaste and other toys, The New York Times has reported in a series of articles.

Last week, RC2, a U.S. toy company based in Oak Brook, Illinois, issued a recall for its popular wooden “Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends” train sets. The recall involved 1.5 million “Thomas Wooden Railway” vehicles and train sets sold at toy stores and various retailers across the U.S. from January 2005 through June 2007.

A subsequent recall has been issued in the United Kingdom, where Thomas the Tank Engine was originated in the 1940s as a character in a children’s story by the Reverend W.V. Awdry. Around 70,000 toys are involved in the U.K. recall, according to The Guardian.

“RC2 has determined that the surface paints on the recalled products contain lead. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects,” the Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a press release dated June 13. “Consumers should take the recalled toys away from young children immediately and contact RC2 Corp. for a replacement toy,” the commission said.

Those “adverse health effects” could include brain and nerve damage, especially in young children, as well as blood and brain disorders. Severe lead poisoning causes vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, anemia, loss of appetite, headaches and in particularly high doses, coma and death.

In an article on Monday, The New York Times reported that recalls have been issued for 24 different toys in the U.S. in the past year, and every one of them was made in China. According to the Toy Industry Association, toys made in China account for around 70 percent to 80 percent of all the toys sold in the U.S., The Times said.

“These are items that children are supposed to be playing with,” Prescott Carlson was quoted as saying by The Times. Carlson is a co-founder of a child-safety website called Imperfect Parent, which tracks recalls of toys and other baby products. “It should be at a point where companies in the United States that are importing these items are held liable,” Carlson said.

RC2 would not comment to The Times, and a Consumer Product Safety Commission spokesman would not say how long ago the problem with the lead paint was discovered.

For a follow-up article on Tuesday, The Times visited a factory in Dongguan, in China’s Guangdong province, where the “Thomas and Friends” toys are made. The paper interviewed workers and took photos on the factory floor.

“You’re intruding,” a factory manager identified only as Zhong was quoted as telling the reporters. “Tell me, why exactly are you here?”

During the visit, a reporter, translator and a photographer were detained by factory officials, and released a day later after local police and government officials intervened.

The factory also produces other toys for RC2, including toy John Deere trucks, NASCAR racing models and M&M’s cars, The Times said. RC2 makes the toys under licenses from various companies. The “Thomas and Friends” toys are made under license from Hit Entertainment, which owns the “Thomas” brand.

According to RC2, items in the “Thomas and Friends” recall are:

 • Red James Engine & Red James’ # 5 Coal Tender
 • Red Lights & Sounds James Engine & Red James’ #5
 • Lights & Sounds Coal Tender
 • James with Team Colors Engine & James with Team Colors *#5 Coal Tender
 • Red Skarloey Engine
 • Brown & Yellow Old Slow Coach
 • Red Hook & Ladder Truck & Red Water Tanker Truck
 • Red Musical Caboose
 • Red Sodor Line Caboose
 • Red Coal Car labeled “2006 Day Out With Thomas” on the Side
 • Red Baggage Car
 • Red Holiday Caboose
 • Red “Sodor Mail” Car
 • Red Fire Brigade Truck
 • Red Fire Brigade Train
 • Deluxe Sodor Fire Station
 • Red Coal Car
 • Yellow Box Car
 • Red Stop Sign
 • Yellow Railroad Crossing Sign
 • Yellow “Sodor Cargo Company” Cargo Piece
 • Smelting Yard
 • Ice Cream Factory

Toys listed that are marked with codes containing “WJ” or “AZ” are not included in the recall.

Earlier, RC2 said that customers would have to cover shipping costs to return the toys to the company. It later agreed to cover postage after angry complaints by parents, The Times said in an article yesterday. Refunds will take about two months.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/OH-WY

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Lycos launches screensaver to increase spammers’ bills

Monday, November 29, 2004

HANOVER, Germany —Internet portal and mail-provider Lycos Europe has launched a program to increase spammers’ bills by having thousands of voluntary users’ computers repeatedly query websites from which spam originates. Such a tactic would increase the bandwidth costs for these websites. However, it also faces legal questions.

Spamming, the mass sending of unsolicited emails, is lucrative in part because each email can be sent for nearly insignificant costs. With such low costs, a commercial spammer needs only to have a very small number of recipients buy their product to make a profit. The goal of many anti-spam proposals has been to increase the cost of spammers sending messages. Lycos’ approach is to make it more expensive to maintain servers that send spam.

Volunteers may download the screensaver from the Lycos website for it. The program would run on a user’s computer in the background and request about three megabytes (3MBs) of data every day. The screensaver shows which spam server is being targeted by the user, where the server is located, and how many others are attacking it at that moment. Target email servers are selected from blacklists from anti-spam organizations, with Lycos’ own verification.

Legal issues arise over whether this can be interpreted as a denial of service attack. In such an attack, computers overwhelm a webserver with requests for data to the point where it does not have the resources to fulfill its normal function. Lycos, in explanatory material on the screensaver’s dedicated website ( http://makelovenotspam.com ), claims that its technology closely monitors the screensavers’ effects on targeted websites and prevents any of them from being completely shut down by information requests.

Lycos Europe operates in Germany where, according to Joerg Heidrich of Heise Zeitschriften Verlag, less than completely shutting down a server is not clearly illegal under the penal code. It may, however, be actionable under the civil code. But Lycos may be betting that no one will file a suit, as that would require those participating in illegal spamming to reveal their identity.

The website no longer allows downloads of the screensaver, and users of the screensaver cannot connect to spam sites, but are instead given the message ‘Stay Tuned’

Baby survives after stroller hit by train in Melbourne, Australia

Saturday, October 17, 2009

A 6-month-old child is alive, having only received minor injuries, after the stroller it was riding in was run over by a commuter train in Melbourne, Australia. The entire incident was recorded by security cameras at Ashburton railway station, where the incident occurred.

Security video footage shows the mother tending to her baby who was in a stroller. She then moves the stroller a safer distance from the tracks. After letting go of the stroller for a second, it rolled towards the tracks and fell off the platform, being struck and dragged nearly 30 meters by the arriving train. Police say the brakes on the stroller were not applied.

The baby only received a minor cut to the head, and had already been rescued before authorities arrived on scene. Mother and baby were taken to Royal Children’s Hospital and released shortly thereafter. At a press conference following the incident, Michael Ferweda, a police spokesperson called it a “miracle” that no one was injured and that the mother was not at fault. No charges are going to be filed. “It was a lucky escape and a chance for commuters to think about heeding warnings to be more careful around platforms,” he added. The name of the baby and mother have not been released.

Jon Wright, one of the responding paramedics who treated the baby said, “Fortunately the train was slowing as it pulled into the station. The baby received a bump to his head and was distressed when we arrived. Luckily he was strapped into his pram at the time, which probably saved his life.”
